I'm working on an OT car with an old school 454 Chev and need a stock type mechanical fuel pump that has a return line. I'd like to go with something flashy, maybe chromed or polished, but not 1000 gallons per minute/pro stock flow. It would be great if it was basically like a stock pump in configuration, so if it dies on the road, I could get one that would be a bolt on swap. I've seen old NOS stuff, but I think the ethanol would kill that in short order. To make it more unicorn, maybe not chinesium? Been searching. Thanks.
Haven't run one in years, but did have good luck with the Edelbrocks back in the '90s-'00s. Don't know if Carter makes a flashy one, but I run their "muscle car" pumps on my FEs with no issues. EDIT: for ease of swapping in case something does happen on the road, make sure the fuel fittings are the same size as a stock pump on whatever you decide to run. Some aftermarket pumps have bigger inlet/outlets. You can have some stock sized fittings in the glove box if that's the case. I actually have either a cheapie stock pump or electric pump sitting in my "road trip kit" for all my cars. Came in handy a few times.
stock with return line, they're kind of large...and this one (for the later one tons) has a 1/2" fuel inlet. If you can't find a "racing" type pump with a return line, you can get a filter with a return line fitting on it, like a 33041
How often do you expect your mechanical fuel pump to die , the stock , original equipment mechanical pump on my 40 year old 454 has 219k miles on it & pumps just fine ..
I always use a Ac delco for 427 X 3 carbs or 69-70 bb HiPo Vett, On 6 cyl sb & bb like said above Polish it for bling
Back in the day when BBC were common and they would starve for fuel plugging the return line was a common fix. Like a diesel and putting a pair of vice grips on the return line to turn it up.
I added a return line using an Edelbrock pump, just tee it before the carb(s). Mcmaster carr has an 1/8 pipe fitting with an orfice of .090, ran 1/4 return line back to the tank.
Thanks guys. I'm leaning towards the stock type, but polished. Not sure what I can do with the gold anodized bottom cannister, but it probably would be ok painted black.
