Are there some factory mechanical pumps that are better than others? for example would the fuel pump on an mid 80's camaro be better and pump more fuel than say a pump on a 120hp 305? any input would be appreciated

In most cases no. In your Camero in a certain year most likely all small blocks would use the same pump . The size and positioning of the fittings are usually the big differences. I know some year high proformace apps would have different pumps, mostly as I remember this was in the 60s. And that might have been just a stronger internal spring for higher pressure.

I believe the only difference you'd find in any of the SBC carbureted engine fuel pumps is the construction (crimped together banded housing or screw-together housing), physical size and number of hose outlets/inlets on them.
