Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in service of the United States of America.

It's a lot more than just a 3 day weekend.

We are free to enjoy our way of life because the brave men & women that laid down their lives in the pursuit of freedom. HRP

Right on the money. When I hear someone say "Happy Memorial Day" it makes me realize they know nothing of the reason for the day. USN 1974-1978

  6. One of my brothers is over playing in the sand box as we speak. Being showered daily with, as he calls it, "metal affection" from the other side. Would like to give a shout out to him. Keep your head down Steve!!

Right you are Danny. I was just sitting down eating a nice rotisserie chicken and it dawned on my that people died instead of me so that I could enjoy that meal. Felt kinda guilty that I wasn't shot and they were. May God bless those who never came home alive.
Let us never confuse Memorial Day with Veteran's day. This weekend is in remembrance of the dead.

Taking nothing away from the veterans or our service men and women in harms way as we speak but today is Memorial Day and is to honor those that made the ultimate sacrifice and never returned to their homes and family's. HRP

Many in my family made the ultimate sacrifice....a day of remembrance for me and my family, and the life of those who didn't come back (The Somme 1916, Iwo Jima 1945, Normandy 1944, Korea 1952 and Vietnam 1968)....I'm humbled by each and every veteran I meet in today's conflicts just as much!...and I remind those around me of what it has cost! Happy Memorial Day to fellow HAMBer's...it's a good day to reflect indeed;):)

Thanks HRP! Well said and quite appropriate since many folks in this country don't understand the real meaning and purpose of Memorial Day.
I would just like to add a sincere Thank You!! to all Veterans of our Armed Forces, no matter where or when you served!!!

Good post HRP. I did not serve but I have a lot of respect for all who did. If you did and are not an alliance member, first vet to respond, I'll pay for your first year and put a "medal" on your firewall. My sincerest thanks to our veterans!

Here's to removing your cover on the mess deck. No thanks needed, just a little respect.

When I hear someone say this it really makes me sad to think it's regarded as a "holiday" and not a day set aside to remember those who made ( and continue to make) the ultimate sacrifice .
To all the active guys, God Bless, and come home safely.

Couldn't say it better, it is to honor those we lost and not those of us who are still alive and kicking.
The old fat version of this skinny *** kid sat here for a while and remembered some close friends who ar on the wall. Hard to believe that photo was take 48 years ago in front of the hooch I had built out rocket boxes.

Then I thought of this bunch that includes my uncle Ed Russel in the Navy uniform, My dad Harold Davison seated next to him, my uncle Jim Davison sanding behind Ed and my uncle Raymond Davison standing behind Dad at around the end of WWII. All are gone now but all were proud of their military

Dad flew 25 + missions as a tail gunner in B25's in the South Pacific. Out of the 6 Davison brothers 5 served in the military and both uncles by marriage were career military.

I guess your Memorial Day is like our Rememberance Day, Nov. 11th. What do you do down there on that date?

Thanks Danny. It's hard to imagine I'm old enough (70) to have lost a relative at Pearl Harbor I did loose a 2nd cousin on the Oklahoma. Yes, let's not forget.

Yo, Harm. They got it. In fact, WE already had it. Sometimes, it's hard to put into context, content or even the right words. But bro, they....we...have it.

    Thanks.
