Hope the mods don't mind me posting this. Today there was a memorial fly past for ten US airmen who lost their lives 75 years ago in a park in Sheffield England. The men manoeuvred their plane away from surrounding houses and undoubtably saved many lives. The other thing that makes this story remarkable is the fact that an eight year old boy who was playing in the park at the time, devoted his life to making and personally maintaining a memorial to the men of the plane called the Mi Amigo. Tony has tended this memorial every day ever since, quietly remembering the men who gave their lives to save so many. A chance meeting between Tony and a BBC newsman in the park around four months ago led to momentum gathering for a 75th year fly past and today the park held thousands of people who gathered to honour these heroes and watch the fly past. Humble Tony thanked people and said he felt the men would be happy that so many people stood in memory of them.
Fallen Heroes, None should be Forgotten! Thanks, Tony deserves to be recognized for his devotion to their sacrifice.
I don't know how to link to it but there is a really nice video about the fly by which consisted of aircraft from both the RAF and USAF. Look up BBC, search for Sheffield bomber crash: Flypast on 75th anniversary. To think that the old gentleman, Tony Foulds, took it on himself at the age of eight to commemorate the selfless act of a bomber crew, and has continued it until now, is inspiring. I hope that someone will continue taking care of the memorial when Mr. Foulds is no longer able to.
Wow, great story. The greatest generation for sure. And thank you Tony for keeping their memory alive.
Alan, just watched the video of the Fly By. Very moving and the people, what a crowd. Tony is quite The Man!
