Im building up a '69 318 to put in my '50 plymouth business coupe. i want an aluminum 4 barrel intake set up on top of the stock motor. any suggestions / preferences on intakes? edlebrock, holly etc. considerations? im pretty much learning this stuff as i go along - any input would be appreciated. thanks kooter
I got an M-1 Mopar, and it is pretty cool. It sits up tall, though, so if you have tight clearance, it may not work. My little bro has an Edelbrock Performer, and that works really well too. But watch out for your carb mounting pattern, some intakes will need adapters if ya wanna run a spreadbore. Jay
Also make sure check the ends of the mounting area for alignment dowels, the aftermarket intakes don't have holes for them.
My favorite intake by far for street performance on small block Mopars is the old Edelbrock "CR4B" or something like that...essentially an earlier version of the Performer. It's a dual plane 4v aluminum intake that works AWESOME with a Thermoquad carb on 318-340-360 Chryslers. I've also used the newer Torker 340 hi-rise single plane intake on a 318 with great results under a tricked out Holley 600 double-pumper, believe it or not! If hood clearance is adequate, it runs alot stronger than most folks would think on a low compression 318 with a healthy hydraulic "cheater" cam! (Stock lift, LOTS of duration!). Those are my two first choices for small block Mopar intakes, if not a 340 six-pack set-up! (Work good, but kinda on the pricey side!!).
Ya can`t go wrong with the old stand by Edelbrock LD340. That`s what I run on my car, but I`m thinking of trying an air-gap or singel plane M-1.
I was just thinking that since you are runnig a 318 you should find an intake for a 318. If you run a 340-360 intake you will have a major step as the large ports of the intake meet the smallish ports of the 318...not good for performace.
I ran the Torker 340 on 'stock' 318 heads and the mis-matched port sizes weren't a problem. The car ran strong and I just used 340 manifold gaskets...everyone just assumed that I had 340 head castings under the intake...but it never needed that! But, the old dual plane CR4B intake, or a Performer would probably suit your needs better.
Hack, out of curiosity why do you prefer the old cr4b or something over the new performer?. port size, volume, flow characteristics. I remembner when wiend made that port-o-sonic (for big blocks)and everyone thought that was the best thing to ever be made, now there almost free at the swapmeets. there probalby aint much differences between the two but just wonder why you prefer the cr4b....... thanx FED
Mainly sentimental reasons, I suppose! I had a few and they worked great. I am positive that Edelbrock has continued to improve and refine their designs over the years, and the Performer intakes that evolved out of the CR4B units might be a wee bit better across the entire RPM range...but you kind of hit on it when you mentioned price.... ...the old CR4B intakes can be had for free or close to it. (A buddy gave me one, and the second one I bought set me back like twelve bucks at a flea market!). I'd bet you wouldn't be able to feel the difference in performance between the CR4B and the 'modern' Performer...but the older one would come alot cheaper, if price were an issue, making it a better value per dollar! As for the Torker 340...it flat-out SCREAMS on a little Mopar mill...but isn't likely the BEST choice for an otherwise stock engine in a heavier car.
Aren't Port-o-Sonics Offenhausers? My ex gf's dad had one on a 360 in his truck... that was a kick ass engine. But , Mopar themselves recommend a Holley Dominator, or of course, one of their M-1's. Jay
thanks for all of the excellent imput guys - just what i needed. some good advice with experience behind it - hard to come by sometimes thanks again kooter
