  1. when you said benz headlights, are you speaking of some 300 pontoon buckets from the 50's?

If all merc's looked the same this would be a boring world. It's my opinion that the Mercedes head lights (yes they are Mercedes) work on this ride. The hood has been layed back and peeked in the front and shaped to match the hood latch panel which has also been peeked and reshaped. The car looked better with head lights, grill and bumper installed. Its also my opinion that most 4 door merc's look boxy. And you know what they say about OPINIONS -- we all have one.

The top was made by Winfield. It was for a 48 Merc. and had to be stretched. The top is removable and will probably not be used much here in Ca. The car is not mine and the customer also has an opinion on the build-- $$$. My ride is a 26 high top T coupe. No fenders, 4 cyl. powered. Pics to come soon.

IMO, I think that many top chops on Mercurys looks quite bad, many builders destroy the flow in the lines when they chop the tops, I take a carson top over any badly chopped merc anyday.

(But of course a lot of chopped top mercurys looks good too. :) )

  8. NOW I get it...it's a customer car! That's why the dumb, fuckin headlights. Probably gonna end up with a consol with drink-holders,billet steering wheel(tilt,of course),and a new CD player, cut right in the middle of a beautiful,Mercury dash,oh well. One thing you're right about though...if all Mercs looked the same,it would be boring.
"Just another, nice looking, traditional Merc...YUK! I'm gonna put Mercedes lights on mine. I'm gonna be different!" LOL! Not everybody can pull off skull grills and cobweb hoods. He wanted to be different too. The difference is,how much money this guy's gonna spend to look bad,HA HA!

Its fun to visit the profiles of the ones that have all the opinions. They all eather drive shit boxes or don't know how to light a torch and have to pay some one else to all their work. I have been building hot rods and customs for over 50 yrs. yes I am collecting S.S. You my not always like what I do and thats ok. My moma used to say if you can't say somthing nice then
    don't say anything at all.

    Hey Bondo Bob,

I'm glad ya got thick skin, something that comes in handy 'round
    here!
I gotta admit, I'm not a big fan of " contemporary kustoms", but
the look of that one works for me. The fact that it started life as
a four door speaks volumes about skill levels necessary to make
that happen. What's it gonna run power train wise? Any chance
you'll post a photo with the hood and grill on, after are "Panel of
    Experts" gets done weighing in?
There's a real good reason that primered cars are so popular to
drive ....primer makes 'um all look like rock stars!
You're correct about the "check book rodders" as well, usually
the ones flingin' the fecal matter the furthest!

when you build one for someone else its always that way. ive did stuff that i didnt like but the owner loved it, and its there car so i make them happy, its a thin line between the two worlds. mercs are a very hard car to pull out of the traditional custom look and not make people talk. my buddy wanted to put some mercedes headlights on his 40 delivery until he found out how much they cost:eek:

  17. My opinion is based on the Traditional website,i'm a member of. If I liked cars of that nature,i'd be on a Goodguys website. I've built about 30 cars,so I know what it's like to build something I don't like, because a customer wanted it. But then again,i'm not the one who went on the HAMB and tried to sell putting Euro headlights on a chopped, lowered, custom Mercury! I can't wait to see the car at Del Mar,or GNRS when it's done. From the looks of the work on the doors,i'm sure the rest of the car will look top notch. Wouldn't bother me a bit to be proven wrong...we'll see.

I couldn't do Kustoms as a paying job because each one has too much of me in it and I couldn't build something I really didn't like. To me thatis a nicely balanced well executed car car spoiled by the lights, change for change sake. There were some pics of a chopped 54 on here last week that I thought was a great car spoiled by the sloper lights, some times less is more. Maybe I just dont like sloper lights...period. Looking forward to seeing some finished pics Bob.

    Hey Bondo bob
It's Dave larsen here. That car is looking good. Some of the people here get there pantys in a bunch if you don't have a car that looks like everyones car here. but if you look in there rides you see tilt col. A/C and air bags and then the cry about your ride not being old school. Give me a brake
    Good work on the ride
    Dave

    Hey Bondo Bob,

Koool project!! Keep the faith brother its hard to be brave enough
to try something different. Keep us posted with the progress.

    Happy Trails,

    Mick

  26. The car you're thinking of is the Noble,Mercury. Bitchin car,but same ugly headlights on it also! The only car those lights "flow" with is a VW or 356 Porsche. NOT a Merc...

I don't think it's necessarily the flow that is wrong in this case as the whole front of the car is reshaped to make them work. I think it's just the identity is kind of lost with the bug eyes kind of like a Kaiser with Thyroid trouble.

  28. Agreed the flow is lost with the back end of that Carson top that is way too vertical:confused:

Definitely BUT he did mention the top was from a 40's Ford/Merc, that he strecthed to fit, in which case it would be more at home. Maybe the customer didn't wanna lay the cash flow for a "new" top.

I've had plenty of customers that want to use parts because they have them and don't realize that it looks like ass or will cost way more to fix.

  30. I think that Carson top is too rounded in the back. I like it better when the top flows into the trunk.
