I am not having an easy time finding automatic choke parts for my 51 mercury. ...considering putting a rochester carb on. Anyone done this with and automatic choke? Relatively easy? Many mods to be made? Do I have other options?....I keep hearing chevy carbs? Thanks...sorry for all the questions....thanks for any help
If all your missing is the cover and spring this place might be able to help you. Corley's vintage parts. This place has a large supply of Old niehoff parts and that part you need used to be available through them. It has to be worth a phone call and he will ship parts. 503-667-1725 If Jack can't help you try Mercury and More at 360-687-3472. You'll have to leave a message and it says with part numbers but you can just tell them what it is you need. Only if he has it will he call you back. If I remember correctly early Olds and Caddy shared the same choke adjuster. The Wizzard
The biggest problem will be the distributor, as the loadomatic advance will no longer work properly with a carb not designed for loadomatic operation.
Quote "The biggest problem will be the distributor, as the loadomatic advance will no longer work properly with a carb not designed for loadomatic operation." end of quote. There must be an easy cure for that issue given how many tri power and 4 bbl change overs have been done since the begining of time. Personally I've never had an issue with the advance and a stock dist. Isn't all about where you pick up the Vac.? The motor will only make X amount and when you introduce it is how it works the advance unit. The Wizzard
The common/easy "cure" for '49-'56 Fords/Mercs was to install a Mallory or similar centrifugal advance distributor when changing to non-stock carbs. If you learn about loadomatic (vacuum-only) advance, you'll find it takes a special very low vacuum signal, around 6" Hg max, to properly operate the advance diaphragm, far less than manifold vacuum, and having no vacuum signal results in no advance with the loadomatic.
X2 Back inna day, when this was common, I used this as one of the criteria to judge the knowledge of those who had post '48 FoMoCo cars and had installed multiple carbs, with the OEM dist., or other wise had used a pre '49 carb with a loadamatic dist. The loadamatic dist. won't work with multiple post 48 carbs correctly either, as the vacuum signal is compromised by the reduced airflow on the carb(s). If you want to use other than post '49 carbs from FoMoCo in multiples, or even single carb other than post '49 OEM, you must change to a dist. with a mech. advance, and ideally ,also with a vacuum diaphram and mechanism that works from manifold vacuum for street use.
