I have a 1950 Mercury 4 dr sedan. Can someone please tell me how to get the front seat out. I already have it unbolted from the floor. The doors seem to be to small to get the seat out unless it comes apart somehow. Thanks
Heheh I like the cut the roof off answer, but this one might actually save some time. Look for where to unbolt the backrest frame from the bottom frame. I'm not familiar with that particular seat, but you may either need to remove trim and/or cut a couple hogrings and pull the upholstery back to get to the bolts. Either way it ain't that tough. Take the halves out one at a time. But if the frame is one piece, yer gonna have to get the sawzall. Olson
Removing the backrest first should do the trick. Is there an apron around the bottom of the seat? If so, pull it and it should reveal where the 'rest' is connected. Probably a 'stud and cotterpin' setup. -stick Or cut out the post between the doors for more room.
Seems like the Merc seats in my friends cars were similar to the Fords of the era. On the Fords, get a guy on each end and just walk it out. The Merc's are probably the same. If necessary, tip the seat so the back is more vertical and it should come right out. If the 4 door Merc's are like the Fords, there's a bolt on the side you can remove and that will allow the seat back to tilt forward like the split two door seats do. In fact, the 4 door seat - with lock bolt removed - is a cool seat to stick in a coupe. No split and it tips forward far enough that the back seat occupants can get in and out with just a touch more trouble than with the split seats that angle in when tilted.
Finally a question I may know the answer to. The front cushion on my 4 door 49 merc comes off by two front clips. You should be able to get the seat out after removing that cushion. If you can't, the back frame attaced on mine by two large bolts at the point where you would expect a folding seat to hinge. Dan
Dudes. THe seats have a cotter pin set up...I know because I had taken both of mine out and it took me a while to find it... check under the front apron...it isn't hard to get the whole seat out of the doors. tok
did you consider taking the pin out of the check strap in the door?? It might allow you to open it a little farther.
Thankyou to all those who replied to this thread. I was able to find the pins and diconnect the top of the seat frame from the bottom and then remove it. I appreciate those who took the time to respond to this thread with help.
