dont let the drives sit too long, be sure to have another copy on a different drive.
Plan on copying the photos to a new drive every so often.

You can also pay for a service (apple is a great example) to store your images and other files

A great way to preserve your digital photos is to have a RAID setup on a decent computer with multiple drives of the same make and model.
(Might be better off paying for a service)

Leaving the photos on a drive stuck in a drawer or disk for years is asking to loose your information.
CDr and DVDr disks will rot over time just. The media used on most recordable disks was cheap.

Don't forget if you don't use archival paper and inks or the pictures you print will also have a short life.

my hard drive does not sit too long. I play with my photos several times a week. it is plugged in and I don't have any car show photos on the computer. my computer is windows 7 and may **** out at any time. should I keep my hard drive unplugged?
Plan on copying the photos to a new drive every so often. that's the plan, just haven't done it yet
You can also pay for a service to store your images and other files. I like to have them in my possession. who knows when another company will go "photobucket" ... luckily I only used PB to post here. all those photos are now red X's or have photobucket printed across them.
A great way to preserve your digital photos is to have a RAID setup on a decent computer with multiple drives of the same make and model. I have no idea what that is

The knee replacement will definately be easier to get over than the shoulder. I can speak from experience on that.
