i have that commerical on a 2 vhs set (50's-60's).......the "GT" in the bottom corner is goodtimes video.
There was a 63- 64 Pont. convertable in the background when she started parking, but by the time she parked it was gone. How many times did it take her to park it in real life?
Look again - the car is seen driving away shortly before she finishes the parking. IIRC, this type of steering could never pass the NHTSA rules, as a backup to loss of power is required. The leverage of a normal wheel is the usual backup. This steering was likely a full-hydraulic system, probably nearly identical to a Citroën's steering. Therefore, the truly ingenuitive amongst us could build such a device. Any takers Cosmo
There was a piece on this in 4/65 Pop Mechs. There, FoMoCo engineer stated the rings only turned 1.75 times lock-2-lock! Always thought it was mad-cool and yes; should be easy to duplicate. I need to put this on my 'back burner' WRT looking for suitable rings... IIRC, there were 7 cars built with Wrist-Twist, I have a pic of another Merc dash (earlier, I think) & the rings are quite different. Wonder if any survived. The NHTSA argument is probably outdated- aren't steer-by-wire systems in the works- where's the backup system there ??
