    Hi all,
This is only my second post so I hope it's in the right place.
I have issues with my Mercomatic two speed auto trans. It's basically a Fordomatic but it's in a Mercury, hence the different name. When I got the car the trans was slipping so I removed some fluid and topped it up with Lucas Transmission Fix. This has stopped the slipping, but now I have a different issue: the trans won't shift into second until the gearbox is warmed up, usually meaning a drive of at least two miles in first. Then I can get it to shift by accelerating hard. Shifts are pretty harsh too when they eventually happen. Any advice? I realise the box could probably do with a rebuild but to be honest I can't afford that. Should I drain it, clean the filter and top it up with new fluid or is it a lost cause?
    Thanks everyone.

I can only think of two things that would cause that one is bad seals in the clutch pack and that would mean you need a rebuilt or a sticking shift valve and you could posably pull the pan and valve body to clean and free up the valves. But most likly you will end up having to rebuild or replace the trans

How many miles are on the vehicle/transmission ?

    Would band adjustments help?

You have confirmed the throttle linkage is correctly adjusted and not sticking?

They're fairly easy to rebuild. See if you can round up a rebuild kit. Some of the Ford manuals had a transmission section in them.
