I'm chasing a leak in my brothers 62 comet. It was originally a 6 cyl converted to a 302-c4 set up. I'm trying to weed out the details left from the PO. The c4 leaked from the bottom of the bellhousing right at the flexplate. I first replaced the front shaft seal, no dice. So i swapped out the trans for a different c4 that had a bad pump and still leaked. So now I have the original working trans out and I'm thinking its leaking from the pump gasket.

My question is what is involved in replacing the pump gasket? Anything to look out for? Tips ? Thanks in advance!

  2. If you haven't already checked it, look at the torque convertor input sleeve. Sometimes if the trans is allowed to 'hang' off the convertor when installing it, these will crack at the notches that engage the pump, with a resulting leak. A new convertor is needed then.

I'm going to inspect the convertor, I'm going to buy one at this point anyway, but I was thinking it could be the convertor because it has had the same leak with 2 trans same convertor Thanks

You sure it is not leaking at the dipstick o-ring? This o-ring hardens up and will not seal. This is on C4's with case fill, not pan fill.

Thanks. I realized I never wrapped this up. After taking the trans in and out about 3 times. I had a ****** guy take a quick look. He found the bushing on the pump was gone. We replaced the pump and gasket, problem solved. Goes to show sometimes you need an expert, fresh set of eyes. Thanks d2-willys I'm aware of the o ring problem, I replaced the tube on my case fill.
