Anybody have pics of what I think is the 52 or 53 Merc Stroppe Mexican road race car, or other pics of 52 or 53 race car Mercs? I just bought one and I am toying with different ideas of what to do with it. Thanks
Just typed "carrera panamericana mercury" into google. Got several hits. I think you should go for it- I though hard about it when Foiled was tryin to sell me rust free 52 sedan. If your flathead is full of cracks like his, the Y blocks are OK under the rules, I think. A really cool car- several Mercs were entered by Mexican Lincoln/Mercury dealers too.
Here is one Ive always enjoyed, it was the Lincoln that ruled those years. http://www.ford-trucks.com/frameredirect/frame.php?action=do&link=http://www.54lincolncapri.com/Ricks_1954_Drag_Car.htm
I also think Clay Smith was involved with the Mercury in those races, I think he built some motors for the "factory" cars and maybe drove one year? He also built the motor for the Kurtis Kraft entrant in 53. Sometimes in the results and history articles that car was called the Bill Stroppe Merc, but it was a Kurtis Champ car with a 4" flathead and good brakes. The best article I've seen by an actual Panamericana racer is in a Volkswagen book, forgot the name but Foiled Again has a copy, I've read it many times. Pretty cool.
