Metal radiator hose question...

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by JK, Jan 21, 2004.

  1. I got my radiator in yesterday (thanks vaphead) and I need to fab up some hoses for it. I've seen some people running metal pipes for straight runs. I would ***ume that this is stainless steel. Whats the right stuff to use? Thanks

A buddy of mine used sink pipe from a hardware store, and it has never given him a problem, and the car has been together for quite a few years. I wish I had some pics to show you, it really looks good. -Joe

All the ones I've seen are stainless.

On a different note, does anyone know what would be the heat dissipation qualities of a SS "hose" compared to a regular? Better, worse, same?

I imagine any difference would be very small.

In the day,, they used vacuum sweeper connections for the long straight runs. They were made of steel back then not plastic [IMG]

I've also seen chrome plated sink-drain pipe used.

Not sure what application you need but, on my flathead I used polished alum pipe for top hoses with rubber hose and clamps on both ends.. Wall thickness is about 1/8". It comes polished and is available from places that weld up tuna towers and marine stuff. Not real expensive, doesn't leak, looks great. Excellent heat disapation. Used chrome plated copper pipe on bottom of rad.Chrome plating reduces heat diapation. Been on the car for 6 years. [IMG]

  9. i use .060" wall stainless tubing. a local company here that installs milk processing equipment has piles of it in their s**** bin, and usually just give me a short piece for free. then i put a ridge on the ends so the hose dosen't slip off with this tool i made:

Galvanized fence post would probably work. I have a couple lengths of 2 1/4" corner post in my exhaust too.
