I'm thinking of repainting my dashboard candy red with flakes. '53 bel air
I'm sure it will look good, but I'm a bit concerned if the flakes will blind me while driving.

    Any expierences ?

Ideas for custom dasboards are welcome too.

    Thanks.

Don't know if it's a good idea or not but thats what I am in the process of doing right now to my 48 f-1 dash. Once the body work is done the dash and door panels will be red with a heavy coat of Roth ruined retna red monster flake. I'm not too concerend with the sunlight reflecting off the flake.

I think it might be asking for trouble with reflections into the windshield mor that a flash into your eyes.

I had a 64 Fairlane that had a beige dashboard, just regular paint. It was so bad, I had to coat most of the top of the dash with flat black to make the car driveable in the summer.

metalflake is never a bad idea. ever. silver and some gold flake can be mildly annoying in the sun, but so can cars with no wipers in the rain , motorcycles with no front fenders, sunburned face in a roadster...you get the idea. red flake you'll be fine.

I like the way you think and some sunglasses should help with the glare

My 60 chevy wagon has a silver flaked gauge cluster area. Its pretty horrible if your in the right light. Red shouldnt be as bad, and it will depend on the curvature of the dash. My dash reflects back at the windshield so you see the reflection of the flaked cluster in windshield.

Thanks for all replies so far, I think I just give it a go !!!

The roof will be flaked candy red too (with ghost flames).
Started stripping windows etc. already..... can't wait to see the result.

I will post pictures of roof and dash when finished.

@heyitsnate, I know about motorcycles without frontfenders.... In that case looks overrule comfort :)

<----- dash in my wagon has been flaked for years. never a problem with glare.

  20. If you flake it, don't flame it. It'll look like you're trying too hard to be cool. If you are really cool...you don't have to try, you just are.

I'm starting to like metalflake again. I moved away from it when every friggin helmet, dune buggy, and VISA-rod was slathered with it. Tasteful applications such as you are considering are just fine and dandy.

been thinking about giving a quick try at flake on my project '51 Ford. so, wife needs to stop in at Jo-Ann Fabric & Crafts store for "just a minute". as I circle inside the store for 5th time I spot the spray paint section. they sell Krylon Glitter Blast (Glitter Spray) in multiple colors of 5.75 oz cans for $8.99. the caps look as close to metal flake as I have seen in a rattle can, this side of Roth products. did not buy'n'try. but, for small areas would be worth a try.

My 56 F100 is silver pearl and flake. I never thought about glare when it was painted, but the dash top glare can be a problem in brite sun. Maybe a darker color will not be as bad a glare, I don't know?

The dash in my '55 Chevy was painted gold metal flake in the '60's. I've had the car since 1970 and it's never been a problem.

  25. sounds like a good plan, cool car post some pics of the finished product

The dash on my Buick is flaked, the glare sucks, even street lights at night reflect on the inside of the windshield at night. I keep a towel in the car for when I drive it...

Here is an example my friend (who is going to do the job) made for the roof.

I really like the flames combined with the candy and flakes, but a lot of HAMB people seems not to like the flames.....
If I remember correct these flakes are medium, so not as heavy as most posted example.

There is not much sun right now, so they don't come out very well in the picture.

Not that I would change my mind, but what's your opinion ??

@zman, I will keep a towel in the car :)

there is some glare on a flat dash comming back with a leaned back windsheild... now if your dash rolls off pretty quick and your glass is an angle not so much your gravy.... My opinion... if I had to do it again I would flake my dash the first time... its just too damn cool not to...

    FLAKE THAT SCHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D
