Projects Mexican Blanket Q

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by C9, Feb 13, 2009.

  1. Getting a little further along with the 31 on 32 project.

Nothing worth a new pic, but a lot of the little stuff is getting done.

Yesterday I found a great Indian Blanket, Navajo pattern I believe.
About 5' x 7' so it looks plenty big enough for the 42" wide Soccer Mom van middle seat I'm using.

What I'm wondering about is the strong oil smell it has.
It's airing out good, but I'm wondering if the shuttle on the loom is oiled during use or perhaps the thread is oiled for some reason.

No big deal and I was wondering if new Mexican blankets smelled like oil?

It's airing out ok and I can try it on for size in a few days.

Just getting set up for temporary upholstery until we can decide what to do.

    More on that later....

Call a shop that sells real wool yarns and caters to weavers/knitters.

They should know what to do.

Can you Febreeze it and stow it in a sealable snap top container?
Maybe some carpet cleaner powder and scrub it and air dry it?

A friend found his huge by large "se****'" at an indoor flea market and had great luck with these methods.Lucky *******!

    Good luck withyour project!

Wash it with cool water and a short cycle in the wash machine. Hang it up to dry. Sunshine takes out smells.

  5. Have it appraised...if it's a certain type of Navajo blanket it is worth a fortune...my brother in law had 4 of them and got a pile of cash for them...

Have the blanket professionally cleaned. They can also "Scotch Guard" it for you.

I saw that one a while back - to say the owner was shocked was an understatement!

Like those before said - always get an appraisal on an old blanket before you go and use it as a seat cover!

I've used Febreze to deodorize, and baking soda and worked that into the fibers to help get rid of obnoxious odors in an old blanket before. Hand it out in the sun to freshen it up, and you should be good.

  8. Thanks for the replies.

The blanket is airing out fairly well and I'll probably d**** it over the seat in a few days.

I can pop a photo if you like.
