Yes, it was a coupe that I bought already chopped. It had a lot of rust repair that had been done using bondo, but I didn't care. I sold it when I got divorced so now I'm between hot rods. I used to post under the username "oddjob". I'll see if I can get a photo to show up. This is a photo shopped version of it:

Updates from Mexico.

Sleds message:
Back on the roof...had to make 2 relief cuts top save the central part only, cause the 2 sides are rotten especially around the driprails and they gotta go!
So i built up a full jig for the rear window frame,to hold it tight in place...that gives me the chance to study the lines and play around the height and style i want to achieve...
Doing some reasearch i liked very much the Mejia Merc but that car is chopped 4" only...the rear section is way higher than mine having 5" 1/2 in the back....
Here the Jerry Quesnel Merc came to mind and is probably going to look closer to that look, according the to the heavier back chop...or somewhere in between there.
I'm takin my time on details too...
More pics to follow....

Fixed the height on top,and decided also to leave a hop at the bottom..so many factors here are coming into place, and again took my time to see all angles and checking the different flows...interesting at this point to see the lines and try to imagine the rest comin shortly....

The fun part now...reshaping the roof and getting the correct flow...and some luck finally...found in the stash of parts a Buick 51 Roadmaster roof which i cut and surprisingly most of the curves are fittin the Merc roof...at list something useful!!
It starts to look interesting...
I'm currently workin on the roof so stay tuned...more updates soon

ETHER,how you doing buddy??
the 4" chop was referred to the Mejia Merc, beautiful car to me...
Mine is chopped more,4" in the front and 5" 1/2 in the back....
Yeah,is kinda pleasing now to see some shiny spots up there..really!
and you have the sensation to something done...
Will post more pix soon...the fun begins

16. sled A Great project you did to save a Merc!
Here is a Pic of my sled its a 4 door but I like it, in the process of rewiring the whole car, it has a 327/300 hp with the Powerglide trans[IMG] I have owned this car since it was 1 year old and has had 3 different engines in it, the Chevy is the last engine I install

Hi Tom, having seen Tom work on an A Model in Perth, West Australia the quality of work does not surprise me. Good to see him keeping up his standards. Will post photos of my 51 4 door shortly. Seeing build documented has inspired me to work on 51. Tom's familiar with the car and has advised best way to go about it. Need door hinges.

Ether, that would be appreciated living in Perth has some drawbacks geographically its about as far away from as anywhere you can get, so finding merc parts can be difficult. My 4 door will be basically stock body minus most chrome low as possible running 460 stroked to 502 six speed tremec from Monaro 31 spline 9 inch and series 3 Jag front. Hope to have 500 lazy horse power. Would like to run it on salt at Lake Gairdner in South Australia. Also need bonnet hinges. Will make more comprehensive list and post with photos. Good to see others share passion of Mercurys.

some more trimming an cutting....same old crap, cut and more cut...above the driprails on both sides the metal roof is gone,so new patches there too...
But starts to look interesting now...
soon will have to work the curved panel,to give the proper lines ...
still a long way to go....
at the meantime i'm tryin to collect the best body parts i have,to save time later on on the front end and 3/4 panels...did i mention the trunk lid is garbage too??
aloha for now...

SLED, love the 50 I would'nt chop my 4 door, I'm too tall. Did chop a 1934 sedan when I was younger - never finished it - wish I had it now!!! also had 2 1932 roadsters. Started to build 1 channelled full fendered - wish I had it now!!! also had a 1934 roadster and a 1936 coupe - wish I had them now!!! Needless to say will NEVER sell the mercury, no matter how long it takes to finish. Tell Tom ass it's his buy the next time he is in Perth, a carton of VB.

Apperantly it's not so much time for beer in Mexico. updates from Sled.

Sleds message:
Hi all, some more sweat from Mexico...slowly the roof starts to take shape,as you see...took awhile fot the rear end to build up,wanted to have it in 1 piece and with some more details, not only the flat panel below the window...
Think it adds some extra class when done...
Still not welded on,cause have to repair the underneath hinges structure first....
Took some inspiration on the Meija Merc as previously said, but this on is much more chopped in the back...
Closer to the Quesnel Merc moreso....
that's all for now....

26. So basically, the original Merc is a pattern to fabricate a body?!!! Too much.

27. I just realized that my heart is racing after reading this whole thread.
Subscribed! Keep up the excellent work, Sled.

28. I feel like Im watching David Fucking Copperfield, with a twist. Instead of shit disappearing, it's being added.
Damn......... just damn. Outstanding Sled!

X38,yeah...i like the definition...practically is correct, cause a huge portion of the original body will be replaced...
I bought an extra front end also but is average conds...will see what i can save there...
But ok,exept for much more time and money invested there is no difference at the end :D
