A trip to TSC and get those all weather bait blocks, make sure the pets cant get into them and you will not have any mice or rats. Oh and Shepradors work pretty good at killing rats also, mine took out one tonite. Billy
I live by a river, and have a 6,000 sq. ft. mostly dirt-floored barn packed with cars and parts, but I have no mice, or rats. My late Bernard was a fabulous 25lbs. black furry killing machine... So my other outdoor cat, 14 year-old Zora is helping out. I also mix peanut butter and concrete together (50/50). Put in where kitty can't get to it, but I haven't had a problem with cats eating my peanut butter balls, which last several weeks to a month before hardening, but the mice love it... to death.
I vote for the moth balls myself. Ive been spreading out moth balls for a couple years and I see no mouse activity. I live in a 100+ yr old farmhouse and it seems impossible to seal up everything. I started spreading them around the perimeter of the house and havent seen any the past 2 winters. Every late fall on the 1st real cold night I would see one running around. They were easy enough to be enticed to a mousetrap, but still a pain. Now if I could only do something about the occasional bat.........
There are feral cats living in the woods behind my shop. Last year, I saw a huge speckled king snake near my shop. I have never seen a mouse in my shop, shed, or house. If I ever do, I will set traps. A mouse may encounter a moth ball, dryer sheet, soap, yada, yada, and come up with a work-around. Death doesn't give them that option.
U-232 also works real well and with a half life of a couple of thousand years you don't have to change it out very often.
my stepmother lives in Iowa and she stores her O/T mustang every winter in an old horse stable. she has placed moth balls around the car every time she goes to store it since the 90's and has had not a single mouse related incident at all...and the stable is full of mice!!!
Cats piss and shit all over everything and the smell of cat is worse than mice. There was a great thread with 5 gallon buckets turned into buffet style swimming pools for rodents. It was shut down for some reason though. Seemed like a good idea.
MY FATHER SWEARS BY THE DRYER SHEETS, He buys me a box every yr. SEEMS TO WORK. I spead them through out the cars . IN AND OUT
bait bars wired to something so they cant carry them off... Lots of em that way and you will be Ok.. Nothing better... DO not use dryer sheets or the lil green pellets.
I have two rodent killers. The hamster got out if its cage this week and Zap the cat had it quicker than you can blink. And Brownie the beagle.....well she's a beagle!
My dad grew up on a farm in Iowa and he used to tell us that they would get two old cereal bowls. In one bowl they would mix equal parts of salt, sugar, and Sakrete and in the other they would fill it with water. The mice/rats would be drawn to the sugar and the salt would make them thirsty. I think everyone can figure out what happened when they would drink a bunch of water. I can’t say that I’ve ever seen this practice put to the test but it sounds like it could work and it makes for a great story. An exterminator recently told me that mice have poor eyesight so it is best to put your traps along the baseboards because the mice will follow the wall as far as they can. He also told me that mice are always looking for nesting material so instead of using peanut butter he said to just tie a piece of yarn to the trip lever on your mouse traps. The yarn will never dry out or go bad and the mice can’t resist trying to take it home. A friend told me that mice wouldn’t chew through aluminum foil. I park my OT ’70 VW on a set of those roll around dollies so this year I placed a bit of alu.foil on the dollies before I lowered the car off the jack and onto the dollies. I then wrapped the foil up around the lower part of the tires. I don’t know if this will work but I figured it can’t hurt to give it a try. Doc
My step son was given a real nice Buick Electra 225 in his grandfather's estate. We went and picked it up last week, and it reeks of mothballs. No sight of mice in the car or in the garage that it was stored in whatsoever. In the other big building on that farm, were 3 cars that all had a bunch of mice crap thoughout them, and about 8 cats. The smell of cat shit was overwhelming in that building. It was awful. No sign of mice, but there were definitely mice droppings inside the cars. They must have had to run like hell to the feed bins where the cats got their food, then run like hell back to the cars again. Anyway, the Buick had no evidence of mice at all, but how the hell do you get rid of that awful mothball smell? The car is in his garage in the city now, where there are no mice, but we need to have that smell go away.
Moth balls = Cancer risk to you and your family. Mothballs contain Naphalene a chemical that releases toxic fumes that you inhale that will break down your red blood cells, a condition called hemolytic anemia. Very very toxic to young children and pregnant women. Very stupid to use.
This is what we use around the farm, with a little variation. we take a coke plastic bottle and punch a hole in the bottom and slide a piece of wier through tha is long enough to spread the width of the bucket. put two holes across from the other about 2" down from the top and insert the wire through the bucket side, the bottle and the other side of the bucket. Fill the bucket with 4-5 " of water and spread peanut butter on the the bottle, make a ramp up to the top of the bucket and watch the results. I have got in one night,so far thats the record.
All the lazy one we have does with them is play untill he gets tired then brings then on the back porch and lets them go. The wife doesn't like it when one runs up her leg while having a drink on the patio, but its damn funny when it happens---and she says she can't dance, if I was to install a pole out there it would be real entertaining--as in climbing the pole while sheading her pants, it would be like old times. Ha ha ha
Be careful if you use the stickey paper. I "caught" a rat in my shop but there was hair and goo everywhere since he flipped himself all around the shop trying to get out. Next time I nail the strips to something heavy.
Damn blew Coke out of my nose. Lmao I'd say you can't beat a classic. "The first spring-loaded mouse trap was invented by William C. Hooker of Abingdon Illinois, who received US patent 528671 for his design in 1894."
cat is usually the best deterent and those glue traps are a joke, all i caught was some footprints! used to have the water bucket setup like silversink mentioned and it works awsome. but so far the victor electronic one for $40 have been the best just put a small dab of peanut butter inside and turn it on. what i like is the blinking light that tells you have a dead rodent inside and easy disposal, well worth the money.
Ilooked at a 40 ford last year that was in a barn/garage since the 1970's. The inside was covered with TIDE powdered laundry detergent. I asked the old lady what the deal was and she said it keeps out the mice. Must have worked, there was no mice damage to the interior at all. It also vacuums right up when you're ready to get the car back out.
After 5 years of fighting, I finally had to get rid of my mouse infested 31 foot travel trailer I had at the lake. I have tried EVERYTHING. It is amazing how mice can get used to things. The dryer sheets, Irish Spring, etc all work for a short while. I tried various electronic devices. the Black and Decker one worked fantastic for about a year, then - guess what - they came back, in greater numbers than before. The Victor traps with peanut butter always work, but you can't catch them all. As for Decon, it does kill them, but I've seen 3 full boxes get consumed within a week with mice caught in the taps the next day. You have to try your damndest to seal off every possible spot they can get in. Unfortunately with the trailer, I found their entry point after the infestation was intolerable.
