I'm back...

I got a new soft top, a better quality one, and installed it. It's not quite as flaky now.

And today I pulled the transmission out most of the way, to see about the weird intermittent noise from the throwout bearing or pilot bushing. The bearing was spinning on the fork, it doesn't have a bump to prevent this. The new one does. I also put a few drops of oil on the pilot, it didn't look like it was eating up the bushing or anything, and I didn't feel like pulling the clutch out to replace the bushing.

I still have to put it all back together, and see if it's any different. Of course it only wants to make noise when it's a couple thousand miles from home, so I guess I may never know if I fixed anything.

 

I’ve only used ones with the bump, the springs are to stop the fork/bearing rattling against each other.

Every GM and ford clutch I have ever worked on had the bump or were not round to keep them from spinning.

 

I put a clutch kit in my roadster two months ago. The bearing had the bumps, wich I'd never seen before, plus the rear lip of the assembly, and the bumps I think, were made out of plastic...

 

LOL!!! Those bump's have only been there for the last 30-40 year's or so... Maybe longer...

 

I don't know about specific brand's, but every one that I have installed since I was 15 had the bump to keep it from spinning. Even the one's directly from GM.
Maybe I've been getting the weird one's all this time...

 

I've seen some with, some without. Then again a lot of this shit I work on is ancient. Mostly I've seen the springs like Mark is talking about, which in fact would do both jobs of keeping it in place and no spin.

 

I have never seen the bumps before, but I haven't put a clutch in anything with new manufacture parts in 20 years. All the clutches I have put in were Hamb friendly cars with NOS parts, no bumps.

 

I went for a short test drive, it works.

I also readjusted the parking brake, it works a lot better now. I had not run the adjusters out enough, and tightened the cables too much, before. That's all fixed.

 

That's why I always read squirrels posts first. I always learn something..
I too have replaced dozens of clutch sets and never seen the bumps either..

 

Try spinning it in your fingers, some I’ve run into were machined off center to keep them from spinning.

 

Learned something new here today. I have seen the springs before but I will admit I usually didn't look for the bumps. The one in the 57 is a new disc/ TO bearing I had/ and the pressure plate that was in the trunk that supposedly had very little time on it. So Far So Good. wink wink

Well I never..........seen the bumps, cuz I was making sure I installed the bearing in the fork correctly.

 

The last clutch I put in had the bumps on the throw out bearing, but that was only about 6 months ago. Not sure I remember them previously, but my memory isn’t as good as it used to be either.

 

amazing how much interest there is in bumps in a throwout bearing collar!

 

I’ve had them with anti spin but the 6 in my stash none of them do.
