i just picked up a late model Ford v8 flathead that I intend to use in my coupe. I live in New York, but in a couple weeks I'm heading to Little Rock Arkansas for a couple months ( got grandkids out there). I'm thinking about taking the block out there with me to have the machine shop work done. Anyone know of any shops that are familiar with flat heads, and do good work? Memphis area and Dallas area are within range, but would like to find something closer. Thanks, Ed
I have heard there is a guy in Oklahoma that is real good with flatheads but then you should check to see how backed up they are. Just a thought. I'm sure one of the guys will hook you up with the right one. Tim
I am probably a little biased but my shop is familiar with flatheads and we do first cl*** job, and would be able to work with you on timeline. We are working on a 51' 8ba right now and was going to do a complete write up on it here once I got it done and out the door. Here is what we have done so far on it. Dis***embled Hot tanked Bored/honed Balanced Gasket matched ports and blended sharp lines out of combustion chamber instead of relieving Hardened valve seats Had Schneiders regrind the cam 99% oil filter conversion (only oil pump and rear cam bearing not filtered) Smoothed and powder coated block, intake, and heads Made harmonic balancer set up for the front that still uses the original crank pulley Rebuilt water pumps Made a steel dipstick mount and welded to pan (aluminum one was corroded badly and being welded don't have to worry about gasket leaking) We are located in Moundridge Kansas so maybe further than you would like, but if you can't find anyone closer or who can do it for you in the time keep us in mind. Check out our website www.chilledirongarage.com and if you are interested I can send some pics or post some. Thank You Durward Smith
Just 10 miles South of Memphis in Horn Lake, MS. lives the best flathead builder in the Mid-South, Paul Kosma. Former blown flattie Bonneville record holder. He has a very high tech local machine shop that does his flathead and banger machine work. High quality and reasonably priced, they and Paul have worked together to perfect flathead machine work. The trip to Paul's is always a treat, as he works on everything from vintage motorcycles to Cacklefest fuelers to high roller traditional cars. He's the real deal and won't steer you wrong. I'll PM you with his number, if you would like.
There is one in Jonesboro Arkansas which is about two hours from Little Rock . He has a complete automotive machine shop, Does a lot of vintage engines. Was in his shop a few weeks ago and he had a 27 Chev engine and a 348 Chev he was rebuilding. He is in the process of building a Model A for himself at this time. Has been doing this for many years and a well equipped shop. ROSS MACHINE SHOP HWY 141 SOUTH JONESBORO,ARKANSAS 72401 870-273 6824 870-935 9609 ROSS JERNIGAN
