I'd have been tempted to use those original two lugs on the casing somehow. It would have saved a lot of work and made the whole thing look cleaner. You REALLY shouldnt need to do 3 p***es on .25", but I don't want to deter you from building your stuff strong. Try doing a C shape as your weld to spread the puddle out a bit. Also what size wire are you running? I hate big wire like .035 or .040. I run .023 and just weld a little slower to get enough wire (filler material) into my weld. You might consider using flux core if you are going to be welding outside a lot. Good luck and practice, practice, practice!
