i got one that i scammed off my auto shop teacher when i was in highschool. i dont know if you know this... but 95% of every school in the US has eliminated shop cl***es.

anyway, the auto shop got canceled and the teacher sold it to me. it had no motor, but i had an old "JC PENNY" hahaha mini bike frame! so i took the motor out of that.(4 horse tu***sa*spelling*) it has a rear drum brake which was better then the pennys tire pad brake.

me and this guy i apprenticed with pinstripped and airbrushed flames on it. and i sold my jc penny frame.

im now trying to redue my flamed out one, put a shwinn front end on ect. and im trying to buy my old JC peny frame back from the kid i sold it to.

heres a pic of what im trying to do.

that bikes bad ***. I had one of the kit type for a while. 5 hp Briggs, did 57 mph in 1/4 at the Wendover drag strip. Not sure what it did out on the salt, didn't seem much faster.

I've got an old Sears mini that was my Dad's. Almost done restoring it. It was one with the torque converter. The engine had a belt clutch connected to a large pulley that would expand or contract depending on RPM so it would gain speed as it went.

Originally it was a green metalflake. I picked up an old helmet at a trift store for a dollar. Its orange metal flake.

CT Fuzz - there are a couple ways to do it.
    1) is to twist a belt on a pulleys (horiz on motor & vert on wheel or jackshaft) some of the old lawn mowers use this system
    2) use a gear drive that will change from horiz. to vert., northern tools and farm supply houses sell these and the can have a gear reduction or increase to them or just 1:1.

Draggin *** - do you know how well that front suspension holds up? I am real curious cause I like look that a lot!!

BTW - mine is somewhere in florida being relayed to Jax. LOVE THE HAMB

I am still trying to figure out how I want my 8hp briggs and lawnmower transaxel to work on my monster mini-big wheel. I found some skinny tall (not full size) trailer wheels that could make a cool bias-ply whitewall look on the back with an adapter plate.

Some foam cut and shaped to form and some fibergl*** and I have a streemlined wheelie machine.

OH!!! AND I HAD THIS CRAZY IDEA TO PUT A SMALL RIDING LAWNMOWER 3 SPEED ON MINE TOO!!! SUICIDE SHIFT!! I NEED A DOWN SHAFT ENGINE, SO THAT SOLVES THE PROBLEM OF THE SHAFT FOR SOME OF YOU. THEN ALL YOU GOTTA DO IS LINE UP THE CHAINS.

  12. Here's mine. Was my 10th grade high school metal shop project.

McCullouch MC-6 racing Kart engine, disc brake on the jackshalf, rear suspension.

Still have it. This picture was taken a couple of months ago.

Don't know about knocking your fillings out. But for the first time user, it'd scare the **** outa' ya' .

With that engine and the gearing, it would run 70mph :D

Not too bad a build for a 14-15 year old kid. What do ya' think?

My son was 13 when he built this. An original design. 5 hp briggs alcohol jr dragster motor with a TAV 30 torque a verter. Hydraulic disc brake from a racing go kart. Hand built frame that he welded, painted, etc. Tank was made by sectioning a damaged yamaha tank. Hid the throttle in the frame for a clean look. This was the confidence booster that led to our current rod project. He needs to sell this to help buy parts for the sedan. He has over $750 in parts in it, what's it worth?

Back in the day' - I used to take vertical shaft 4 stroke engines and put the oil dipper/splasher from a horizontal engine on the end of the con' rod like the horizontals. This would work fine... - for a while. You have to figure out how to orient the carb and the lifter tappet galley so they will work without leaking all the time. The typical verical 4 stroke turned horizontal has the advantage of having the large mounting surface for the mower deck. I found this would bolt right up to the top and down tube bars on a typical "balloon tire" boys bike. The main drawback is the 'vert shafts are typically 7/8" and there aren't centrifugal v-belt or chain clutches generally available in that size. (but I have one from a snowblower).
A big 12.5 vert probably uses the oil pump eccentrically driven off the crank or cam. Never had the opportunity to F'U' one of those to my specs!.

More fun can be had with an old 2 stroke engine. The old Jacobsen/Lawn boy 2 strokes verticals could be mounted in any position as long as you could get gas into it. Many had the nifty "diaphragm" carb with no float. One early iteration of motorbike I built had a 2 stroke vert bolted into a bike frame and the float carb was totally wrong so I'd just turn on the pet**** to run it as it would flood continuously and shut it when I shut down the engine.

The biggest problem for me as a young teen was total lack of access to welding. I came up with some interesting solutions. The drive to the rear wheel was the hardest to work out but I standardized on a system that eliminated the pedals but retained the rear coaster brake. Final drive pulley was a smaller wheel rim attached to the spokes(bad idea!!!) or later figured a way to bolt to rear wheel.

Alright... enuff--- I'll stop for now,

  22. I hear you!! I was maniacally intent on getting one but my old man and his ten thumbs couldn't wrap his mind around the fact that I could indeed build one. And being an insurance adjuster he'd seen the toll a motorcycle (any kind) accident can have. In retrospect I'm glad I never bought a bike - I remember how I used to drive in my youth. I was reckless but unfortunately not wreckless.

But now that I'm older I'm starting to build some bikes in my head... you guys got me thinking.

If you guys can't find all of the mini bike stuff you'd ever need in the pile of links KCsledz posted, you might be better off finding some sort of mini bike forum.

To quote a friend, "mini bikes are the crack of doom." Just take a minute think about what they did to R&C. I understand that the occasional mention of a minibike will pop up now and then since people seem to love to ride them around at shows and events. That's not my beef.

I think posts started for the sole purpose of talking about mini bikes are not on topic. Maybe your best option is to take it over to jockeyjournal.com where they are more focused on two wheeled fun?

I'm willing to leave this open for comments for a bit, but my gut reaction is still that mini bike specific posts go away.

  27. Topics to discuss. That's open for debate. I've seen some REAL **** that had no place here.

I guess you're saying that the November 1960 issue of R&C little pages, primarily devoted to mini-bikes, led to their early demise?

Weren't mini-bikes part of the drag racing scene years ago? Every event I went to had folks running throughout the pit area on them to save shoe leather.

Now that was back when you were hot **** to own an open trailer hauled with a pick-up truck.

Today all ya' see is golf carts and 18 wheeler haul rigs. See the evolution here.

How many folks on this site started tinkering on a mini-bike and then graduated to their first car? That's what I did.

Old traditional style mini-bikes are part of the hot rodding past.

With all that being said, I'm not too keen on seeing "Chopper" mini-bikes here. I wouldn't mind seeing those posts go some other place.
