so i bought the db electric mini starter and have now been through two of them. the most recent will no longer retract the gear. its staying engaged. does anyone know of another brand of mini starter that will work with the 302 c4 setup with block hugger headers?

Did you try shimming it out at all?

    Read this thread
here and check out the links in the last post. While Ford starters are located by the block plate sometimes there can still be an issue with the depth the starter reaches in and where the drive contacts the flexplate/flywheel. If it is dragging then I would say your starter is engaging too far. Do you have a block plate between the engine and transmission?

I also found this on another site.
You have a starter problem so I would fix the problem before just sticking another starter in there. BTW, I have the same problem with my db starter as mentioned in the quote. I haven't shimmed it yet but it is on the list of things to do.

After recommending these to a lot of guys that have done the swap and not hearing any problems and only praise,I would think something else is the culprit, the people at DB are usually helpful on the phone so I am curious as to what has transpired when you spoke with them.I am running the same starter and their one wire alternator and couln't be more pleased.

I have had 2 from DB and they do the same "dodge" sounding thing every time I start it. I just have had too many projects in the fire right now to worry about it.

94 mustang 5.0 starter is the same size as the db, 120 bucks, it fires right up and runs great now

Good to hear you got it fixed. Was the Mustang unit a mini starter as well?
