I picked up this 4hp 187cc Briggs engine for "El Pequeño Diablo".

It runs pretty good but needs a few adjustments and probably a new spark plug. Anyway, this small shaft is sticking out the side of the engine and has an "arm" on it. A bent up little rod was running up to the carb but it wasn't hooked to any of the linkage but I believe I can see where is is supposed to hook.

My question is: What is it? It ran without it before. Do I need to hook it back up?

In the pic it is directly to the right of the oil fill tube.

    Thanks, JH

It's part of the guvnah alright...you, ummm...SHOULD hook it up if you're bringing that heap to the HAMB drags...a Briggs & Stratton without a governator is a ticking time bomb!!!

(Besides, I can smoke ya REAL good if I can convince you that you NEED that hooked up! [IMG])

    Next Stupid question:

After I take the arm off there is a shaft that runs into the engine case. Do I leave it there or pull it out and plug the hole?

    Thanks, JH

I just left the shaft there on my Tecumseh...took everything else off.

But...you really SHOULD hook it all back up! [IMG] [IMG]

Take off the side cover. Remove the govenor. Then tap the hole and plug, or fill with JB Weld.
