No. 5 on my '49 ford keeps missing. I'll hold the plug wire about a 1/4 from the spark plug and it runs just fine. Put it all the way on and it stops sparking at that plug. I've taken the plug out and widened the gap twice. both times it fixed it, but only for a short time. Any ideas on how to fix this for good?

Time to break down and buy a new set of wires.

Switch a wire from a different cylinder to see if it's the wire. Check the cap to see if you have a crack in it that is also causing the mis-fire. I would also narrow the gap on the plug back to the stock setting because that could lead to a mis-fire because the spark will find a closer location to jump too "like in the cap or from the wire to metal if the wire is bad.

My old electric hair clippers usta do that. If I didn't hold the cord in just the right position they wouldn't work. I finally broke down and replaced the wire that was broken internally and shorting.

    Have you replaced the wire?
    Taken a compression test?
Switched the plug with #6 plug to see if the problem follows the plug?
