Here is a few being in the business of older cars:

restoration started: real meaning parts are scattered around the under sized one bay garage.

best example around: probably because the owner never gets out much

In the late 1980s...the Yugo hit our shores for a short period of time. Can you imagine working in the ad department on the Yugo sales brochure?

Here is example of one of their lines for their Yugo convertibe. No joke: The top is easier to work than the Porsche. Really? I can't fathom a Porsche buyer even remotely comparing the 2 cars!

The real joke with the Yugo was the reason the car had a rear window defroster....was to keep your hands warm when you pushed it.

Someone earlier posted ran when parked.....don't most cars run prior to being parked?

I love the ads that leave out some of the important facts like 2 door or 4 door...or someone with a Vette lists it as a 2 door....sounds like to me they must have also made some 4 door models as well.

Buick Grand National black.....they all are black 1984-1987.....

Or, needs very little to be running......if that was the case wouldn't the seller invest the time/money to get it running to get more money?

Or, you make a deal and the seller can't locate the title....you would think they would have it handy prior to marketing the car.

    deniskirban@yahoo.com

some of the best ads are on Craigs list....its hard to believe some of them took spelling in school.....course I make my share of errors....nite, rite, lite etc......just reads better!

  2. like new!!! when its a ten year old paint job!! or original condition?? if that were so then it should look, smell, and sound like it was made yesterday not three different colors, smelling like ciggerette death and puke and sounding like its only running 5 cylinders!!! and not to get off topic and If I hear another gay ass BRO!!! with his tribal flamed tatoo call one of my cars a rat rod I sware I just might cut his fucking ears off!!! the last show I was at I was looking at a 31 A with blown 8BA and two bro fuck fags looking like there trying out for golden state nationals were standing there in front the car and one says to the other "what kind of hemi is that" LOL so i look at them and say" the flat head kind dipshit" go park your bike in the back of your lifted truck and act hard!!!

  3. Speaking of spelling.

One of the OT quotes that gets me is,
    'Could care less'.
    Should it be,
    'Couldn't care less?'
If you could care less that means you Do Care about the subject at hand. If you 'Couldn't care less' that means that whatever the subject is. is completely at the bottom of your list of cares. Makes much more sense to me that way.

    Doc.

  5. Reminds me of.

    I didn't do nothing.

    So you are guilty then..

I can't go through all those pages to see if it was mentioned so i may just repeat somebody else.
There is no such thing as pre detonation. Pre ignition, yes or detonation, yes, but not the two together. Though they may result in the same mess they are two different things. Using these together like all the others brought up on these 20+ pages makes me pity the person using them. It's the same kind of pity I have for teenagers trying to impress anyone when the only stuff coming out of their mouths is BS.
Motor is ok used as a verb or adjective (or electrically driven power plants) but not anything with internal combustion. The fact that 80% of the world uses it wrong (especially so many professionals) is still wrong and beyond pity. Your motor didn't blow up when the valve touched the piston, your ENGINE did! Yes, I believe this is the biggest sin in the modern world, bigger than not telling the owners of Vegas to change the oil often, and parents thinking their kids need texting. Don't fight it when people are ignorant, we all are at some level.... Just smile with pity![IMG]

well said the motor may have blown up if a rod pushed it off the block but first the engine has to let go

I can't stand people who describe their E.T. as "10 four" instead of "10 forties". I mean we're talking a car length difference from 10.40 to 10.49. I know it's because of "Pinks" and Rich Christiansen. I won't diss the guy's success but he's got those calls WRONG. At least you can tell right away if you're talking to seasoned racer or newb.

The other one is "noss"...I fuckin hate that! Fast n Furious bullshit! It's nitrous, or juice, or spray, or squirt, or hose. The public at large are sometimes just a bunch of sponges that start sayin whatever they hear on TV or in the movies. I know it doesn't really matter much, just sounds uninformed and inexperienced. Like the E.T. thing, at least you can tell who you're talking to.

  12. Or around here we sometimes say "squeeze". If someone says "NOSS", I interupt and say I won't talk to you if you use that word. (I won't do hi fives either)

Im with you 100% on those.
They are right up there with:
    '32 Deuce
    Model A 5 window
Those who call anything without fenders a "roadster"
Those who cant spell Camaro (Camero)
Using the term Rat Rod for anything in primer
    Big block Pontiac
Those who refer to their car as "My Ol' School" (Skool?)
Anybody who, when seeing a B&M shifter, tells his buddy the cars got a shift kit
and any dipwad with a stockish car that can smoke the stock radials telling me that it runs "high 9's or low 10's"...gimme a break!

Simple spelling mistakes get under my skin. It is not that I expect everyone to be able to spell. Even I can't spell very well, even with all of the advanced edumacation I have had.

Spelling is easy. I am a tool using monkey. I let my browser take care of it.

Firefox has an in-line spell checker. As I am typing this, it is checking the spelling of what I am typing, underlining the misspelled words with a wavy red line. When I right click on the misspelled word, it suggests the correct spelling. It is a free download, too.

As for you folks who cannot correctly spell the name of the car your are selling, when it is written on the side of the car, title, bill of sale, you are on your own.

I apologize for the length of this but I used this to my members of a weekly inner circle I do to my customer list. This guy really "drives" the point home about his car!!!!!!!

Here is the ad from Craig's List for a Pontiac Fiero with 30,000 original miles:

"You read the heading, and I'll reiterate (that means repeat) for those of you who aren't so smart. This car is an 87 model year with O-N-L-Y 30,600 O-R-I-G-I-N-A-L-M-I-L-E-S!!!!! Get it? Good! Now don't ask me if the miles are real, true, rolled, actual, nautical or otherwise.

Next, if you only have 300.00 dollars to your name click off of my ad right now!!! NO, I'm serious RIGHT NOW!!! For those of you still with me, Lets get down to business. It is a 4 cylinder (no turbo, supercharger, nitrous, alcohol injection) Just 1, 2, 3, 4, cylinders with an AUTOMATIC transmission (this means NOT a stick shift for you "special" people).

This car is almost a perfect ten, I'll explain in detail and you decide for yourself if this is a great deal for you. First off this car if bumped to a 10 would bring 9-10,000 dollars. Since it isn't, but close, I'm being MORE than fair with my price. First, the outside, from 20 feet it is perfect! A few steps closer and you will see a very small blemish in the paint on the outside of the wheel well (NO It wasn't in an accident!!!! Did I say it was in a freaking accident? Dummy! Let me finish!)

Its just needs a light sanding which you would ONLY do if you were going to repaint this car, otherwise you can't barely notice it. Next, the paint is gold, but a bit sunfaded on the top surfaces (No NO NO it's not dull, rough, scummy, dirty, beat, or in primer.) Gold paint has silver metallic in it and in some places the gold paint is fading and the silver metallic is showing through.

It is shiny, clean, sparkly, nice, and definitely has a few more years in it unless this bothers you. If it does, a full repaint on this car is not expensive being its not bigger than a thimble (OK OK OK its a little bigger than a thimble, don't sue me!!) Next the headliner is starting to drop a little (Easy now, don't get excited!) It just needs to be restretched) and you can most likely use the same material thats already there. Or buy a brand new on for about $100.00.

Thats it for the bad stuff. A repaint if you are ANAL, and a headliner to dot the I's and cross the T's Otherwise this car is PERFECT!!! New tires (ok maybe 1000 miles on them) Engine looks like it was NEVER EVEN STARTED (no joke here, its really that clean) Interior- MINT (YES, I remember what I said about the headliner but the carpets look NEW as do the seats and the rest of it. Radio, Newer Kenwood C/D player with HD ready, SAT ready, and it has an I-Pod/MP3 hook up ( Did you miss that, I said IPOD/MP3 H-O-O-K-U-P only, this means you are not getting an Ipod nor an MP3 player....got it?

NO NONE NODDA NIL NEGATIVE ZERO ZIP on the ipod) Phew, next the trunk and front storage areas- MINT (NO there is no gold in the trunk, the color is gold, there is no ore included! and MINT means "really nice and clean" not U.S. Treasury) Seriously, this is a nice car. it is very clean, and runs as new. Everything is tight and all buttons bells and whistles work as they should, perfectly.

Please don't bother asking if I'll take $1000.00 or "what kind of shape is it in" or any other stupid question that may pop into your pea-brain. I'm not paying you to think, so don't! If you are serious about the car, do some research and you will see that this car is half price. So, that being said.....NO I will not deduct so you can repaint it, YOU repaint it for a few hundred then you can flip it for 9-10,000 bucks. This car is perfect for a commuter, student, grad, second, first, or fun car. It gets around 34 mpg and up to 40 on highway runs!!!

What it ain't.....A racecar!!! It looks great and handles well, but its not going 0-60 in 5 seconds. Am I clear NO drag racing Lamborghinis unless you like the look of tail lights fading into the horizon-----ahead of you!!! You truly can't go wrong with this car though. If you bought it and drove it 12,000 miles a year for 3 years, you should probably get the same $4,500 or more back, essentially driving a car for free!

Check Ebay and you will see what low mile Fieros are getting, and DO NOT compare this to one with 130,000 miles when you call me to tell me about another one you saw down the street or that your grease monkey buddy has on blocks that you can get for 500.00--- go get that on and leave me alone, because you should have clicked off of this ad 5 minutes ago and saved yourself the "Hooked on Phonics" experience it took you to read all these big fancy words.

Now wipe the sweat off your brow, and move on and let serious buyers read on to my Phone number. Hope to hear from the rest of you who are serious and have the ways and means to complete a purchase. You will not be disappointed at all! It really is a great car. Thanks for your time, and for putting up with my obvious sarcasm. Have a nice day."

  20. I wasn't going to bring this one up. It IS somewhat OT to this thread, but I hear this every day too, often times by supposedly educated radio and TV personalities.

Also seen ten times a day - "to" used to mean "also".
What amazes me , is the same writer will put a double o into "lose " but a single o into "too"

The phrase "I could care less." is actually CORRECT American colloquial phraseology, although seemingly illogical. "I couldn't care less." is also considered a correct colloquialism, but is considered a British colloquialism.

  23. Help stamp out ambiguity...just say, "I don't give a shit."

  24. Moonie,

It may be used and considered an acceptable form of the expression, but I'm still not buying that it is correct.

You see how it was thought of 35 years ago, in the first paragraph below.

To me ,this is why preserving the (English) language is so important, even here on The HAMB.
Otherwise , in a few decades "noss" will become an acceptable term:confused:

The form I could care less has provoked a vast amount of comment and criticism in the past thirty years or so. Few people have had a kind word for it, and many have been vehemently opposed to it (William and Mary Morris, for example, in the Harper Dictionary of Contemporary Usage, back in 1975, called it “an ignorant debasement of language”, which seems much too powerful a condemnation). Writers are less inclined to abuse it these days, perhaps because Americans have had time to get used to it. A bit of history first: the original expression, of course, was I couldn’t care less, meaning “it is impossible for me to have less interest or concern in this matter, since I am already utterly indifferent”. It is originally British. The first record of it in print I know of is in 1946, as the title of a book by Anthony Phelps, recording his experiences in Air Transport Auxiliary during World War II. By then it had clearly become sufficiently well known that he could rely on its being recognised. It seems to have reached the US some time in the 1950s and to have become popular in the latter part of that decade. The inverted form I could care less was coined in the US and is found only there. It may have begun to be used in the early 1960s, though it turns up in a written form only in 1966.
Why it lost its negative has been much discussed. It’s clear that the process is different from the shift in meaning that took place with cheap at half the price. In that case, the inversion was due to a mistaken interpretation of its meaning, as has happened, for example, with beg the question.
In these cases people have tried to apply logic, and it has failed them. Attempts to be logical about I could care less also fail. Taken literally, if one could care less, then one must care at least a little, which is obviously the opposite of what is meant. It is so clearly logical nonsense that to condemn it for being so (as some commentators have done) misses the point. The intent is obviously sarcastic — the speaker is really saying, “As if there was something in the world that I care less about”.
However, this doesn’t explain how it came about in the first place. Something caused the negative to vanish even while the original form of the expression was still very much in vogue and available for comparison. Stephen Pinker, in The Language Instinct, points out that the pattern of intonation in the two versions is very different.
There’s a close link between the stress pattern of I could care less and the kind that appears in certain sarcastic or self-deprecatory phrases that are associated with the Yiddish heritage and (especially) New York Jewish speech. Perhaps the best known is I should be so lucky!, in which the real sense is often “I have no hope of being so lucky”, a closely similar stress pattern with the same sarcastic inversion of meaning. There’s no evidence to suggest that I could care less came directly from Yiddish, but the similarity is suggestive. There are other American expressions that have a similar sarcastic inversion of apparent sense, such as Tell me about it!, which usually means “Don’t tell me about it, because I know all about it already”. These may come from similar sources.
So it’s actually a very interesting linguistic development. But it is still regarded as slangy, and also has some social class stigma attached. And because it is hard to be sarcastic in writing, it loses its force when put on paper and just ends up looking stupid. In such cases, the older form, while still rather colloquial, at least will communicate your meaning — at least to those who really could care less.

Man, I'm having flashbacks of Miss Kubista's 11th grade English class back in '62. Back then, I had a copy of Hot Rod or R & C hidden in my notebook to keep me awake....

You guys never touched on "it's an easy fix," describing a part the seller doesn't know how to repair. If it were an easy fix, fix it, then sell it!

  27. What really annoys me is that I've got to search "discriptions" to find this thread.

Thanks for starting it though, "dude".

We all learn something every day.
Well , it's supposed to work that way, anyway.

If you read that through to the end, you should buy it. The English language is constantly changing...has been for hundreds of years. But, really, I think you're taking what I said waaayyyy too seriously. :)

When ever the word "quality" is used in conjunction with a part that's packed in pale card board and real cheap packing tape.
