I hate being the Word Police, but this thread is asking the question. I hate:

    Disk Breaks
    Prolly
Motor turns over, or, motor doesn't turn over (define "turn over")
Ran before I took it apart
    Page-long sentences with no punctuation

I could go on, but I've mostly surrendered myself to the fact that many if not most of us don't have very good language or communication skills.

Only to be outdone by "owned by the same family for 30 years"

Which really means Dad bought a new car and carefully maintained it, then gave it to his kids who then thrashed the ass off it. Then he changed the title because he got tired of all the traffic violations in his name! After that it was parked up [see "was running when parked"] because all the offspring were too stingy to pay for its upkeep and were all too greedy with any proceeds from trying to sell it.
After the old boy "kicks the bucket" all the vultures want to sell his property, but first they need to sell the piece of crap that has grass growing up to the headliner .

  5. I'm guilty of using prolly sometimes. I'm not a fan of the word. I'm just too lazy to type out probably in longer writings. I sure won't use it verbally. Only in print sometimes to speed things up.

    Yeah! Selling for a friend.

This usually means the owner is a "lying sack of shit" that can't look you straight in the eye.
So he gets his ignorant friend to do his lying for him.

Sometimes proffesional traders use this bullshit to distance themselves from any liabilities [ this explains their 60+ cars listed via online auctions ]

  11. From a pretty reliable source:

    ED WINFIELD
HIS HISTORY AS A CAMSHAFT MANUFACTURER
    compiled by
    HARVEY J. CRANE, JR.
    October 1, 1999
<TABLE style="BORDER-COLLAPSE: collapse" id=AutoNumber1 border=0 cellSpacing=0 borderColor=#111111 cellPadding=0 width="100%"><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%">Ed Winfield made his first performance camshafts in 1914. These were motorcycle cams with individual lobes pinned to a shaft.

His first automotive camshafts were ground in 1919 when he built his first homemade cam grinder. Ed was 17 years old at that time.

Ed told me his mother gave him the money to purchase a used grinding machine that he converted to a cam grinder by adding a rocker table. This homemade cam grinder was used in his mother's garage to regrind Ford Model T camshafts into racing specifications.

Ed told me he first made only two masters, a SEMI RACE GRIND and a FULL RACE GRIND! He later made a third master that was more duration and lift than the SEMI but less than the FULL. He then used the FULL RACE master as an intake and the new master as an exhaust.
He called this new reground camshaft a THREE QUARTER RACE CAM! Ed said "It was three quarters of the way to a full race cam".

According to Dema Elgin, ED began working for Harry Miller at the age of 14 1/2 in the carburation department. Within a few months he was doing other machine work on the famous Miller racing engines. Harry wanted Ed to stay on with him and offered Ed more money. Ed was being paid .60 cents per hour and was offered .70 cents, but ED wasn't fond of Harry because he was like a dictator.

Ed quit grinding camshafts in October of 1969 after he finished a batch of Drake Offenhauser camshafts. That's 55 years of grinding cams!

  13. If you were from SoCal and spoke Espanglish you might do so. In Spanish, the 'v' and 'b' sound are often transposed (as one of my girlfriends back in high school in the '60s used to joke about what she learned in her Spanish class: "V, as in bictory..").

It was kind of an in-joke with a lot of my Hispanic friends when I was a kid...

  14. Any of those kinds of mistakes can irritate, especially as they're usually used by someone who thinks they know stuff.

I guess I've mellowed in my old age and just ignore it. I had a young tuner-type tell me about how one of his buddies dropped a "250 Bigblock" in his Holden Commodore (an Australian GM product). I just smiled...

Do a search on my previous posts concerning spelling and the obsessive compulsive individuals who stress about it.

Interesting that a term my 48 yr old ass didnt know the origin of and a term I thought was bogus has recieved so much feedback.

Geez guys, I didnt know that the term was legit. I stand completely corrected.

Now, the next time that guy at work uses it, I will tell him I thought it was bullshit, that I posted so on the net and had my ass kicked over it.

    *smile*

Well you certainly weren't the only one. And "Dumbie (or Dummy) is not a fair label for not knowing something. So we all learned something.

The one that irritates me the most is one that's common on fiberglass '32 roadsters.

"All original '32 Roadster that had the body replaced sometime in the '70's with an aftermarket fiberglass body."

    Really, what?

That is a common term used down under!

You Americans started it , during WWII with your GMC Army trucks with "Artillery Rims"

    Down here Tyres = Tires
    Rims = Wheels
    Wheels= Wheels & Tires Combined

eg: can you balance these wheels?
or can you fit those tyres onto an 8" rim ?

  27. And every Alloy wheel is called a "mag wheel" or Mags.

I hate classified ads for cars with 12 volt rear ends or impalas that are pillowless!

  29. Two red flags in an ad are when a seller uses the terms "I was told" and "I understand". I've been around long enough to know that when I hear that, it's the start of somebody putting distance between themselves and the lie they're about to tell you.

"I was told by the previous owner that the engine is rebuilt".
Of course, there are no reciepts and the engine has been painted with a spray can while still in the car.

"I understand that this is a factory (insert lie here) car". (big block, fuelie, 409, hemi, copo, and on and on). But no, I don't have the tags because someone removed them, along with the motor, trans and rear. But it does come with a high redline dash tach that proves what it is. Yea, sure...
