    today it's "mint"

item described as mint, shows up and looks like a mint picked up off the sidewalk..

  2. The word "dose" drives me nuts when I see it used in an ad. Yeah the dumbshit probably had a dose of something when writing the ad.

My grandpa, born in 1899 used to pronounce your name, "BerShack'!

  4. I'll bite: Guys who insist on (mis)pronouncing 'grand (as in "5 grand" for that car) as "5 Grr" for that car.

If I could get it for just 'grr'ing, I'd have a dozen...

Oh, yeah, misspelling?? I simply assume you are an idiot. Then you will have to work three times as hard to convince me that you actually know something. And I'll still, in the back of my mind, doubt you.

O.K., I'm gonna jump on this one. The 'mint barnfind' is annoying. BUT: the 34' is grating.

    34' Ford.
The Ford is 34' long? How does anyone conscious make that error???
The apostrophe abreviates the century. (1934, abreviate the '19': that makes it '34.
    Not 34'.
I'll bet Kirk simply copied the ad verbatim... his posts are always quite legible.
So... $2900 for a 34 foot Ford? Less than a C-note per foot, in yacht prices!

today my dad took me to my monthly doctors apointment. and on our way home we stop to look at couple of model A's. at any rate.. the term rat rod came up.. my step dad, i consider him dad is a gear head.. in his 60s now retired ( ill help him get something up and running so he can cruise in his golden years come winter. probably his 60 Chevy 2 door Biscayne which is in great shape. just needs headers hooked up and the 4 speed on the floot linkage figured out, was a three on the tree.. at any rate...).. and we were talking, i was shocked when he told me the one i wanted was the one with its original patina. the primer gray one look so much better ( one was a 4 door gray primer, the other original surface rust patina 2 door ).. just blew my mind. this man loves new paint.. so not sure what the deal is.. i told him well id prefer to keep my white T shirts white.. he said spray a clear coat over it. hah.. not really a on topic, but this whole "rat rod" thing has me so confused.. its on every description for part for sale.. from a model T hood, to a 3 year old vet.. when it even gets my dad liking the look? now that i understand what a rat rod is.. ( i know the patina is only part of that rat rod look.. and does not make it one by it self.. ) i really hope he was just thinking of resale value.. or i dunno pops.

So right...like it came out of my own head! (but aren't we "Gauvachos"?)
Hell, my Mexican pardners call me a 'Paddy'. I tell them my real name is "S.A. Vato". They laugh loudly.

I have to say this thread delighted me. My friends on the HAMB are so perceptive about the underlying meanings (and their sometimes annoying replies)

Rich Fox, I want to say I never had any issues about your spelling. You have always been a mentor to me. Remembering Harry at Automotive Industrial Supplies, and Dema Elgin... Sophisticated company here...

Yep, "mint" is about as stuped as it gets. Here's why: "Mint", in numismatics, refers to a coin that is in the exact condition that it left the mint, including being untouched by someone's hands. A literal impossibility for cars.

So the one description that could not possibly apply is most often used.

"Drive it home today!" With no brakes! Still drove it home though, not the smartest thing I ever did but I made it with only a few red light violations!

...Jugheads who run a car ad with a picture. Wade through the exagerated or irrelevant description and the seller subtly mentions that the picture is not of the car for sale. The seller just signaled me to avert my eyes or turn the page as quickly as possible.

Runs good with no engine? must have a motor in it then...or may be "runs good" means it rolls nicely when four guys are running behind it pushing it along.

the one that bugs me, minus all the others mentioned is: "This Part came off a 1927 Dickfer". Should read: "This Part came off OF a 1927 Dickfer". It's little, but it drives me crazy..........(that's what she said)

I saw an ad yesterday for an off topic car that was "underbooked". I guess it needs a new agent.

HA! I'd forgotten about this one!!!.My ol' lady listens to a radio show where people call in and whine about how f**ked up they are. and one woman called in and said to the host that ever since she had started listening to the program that she'd done a complete 360. The host said "I must be doing a terible job...are you even listening?" Then proceeded to point out that this lady was......a dipshit.

Also 3D is a slang that has gotten out of hand. "we live in a 3D world"
No, we live in a 4D world, You have a front, a back and 2 sides. if you are standing in front of something you can likely see it in it's 4 sided spatial relation, feel, hear, and smell it. Maybe my art teachers were wrong

I've browsed this thread and hesitate to add fuel to the fire, but there is one I see and hear a lot that really bugs me.
Post, as in "a two door post '56". Cars can be hard tops, sedans, wagons, coupes, and several other styles. Posts are very useful for building fences, supporting roofs or wires, but ordinarily don't have doors.
If you own a car you really owe it to your self to know whether it is a 2 door hard top or a 2 door sedan. If you own a post with doors put up a picture, I'd like to see that.

I cant stand when people are selling a car and the only picture they put up is of some finished car they found on the net stating "This is what the car could look like with come TLC".

Yea, Im going to whisper sweat nothings into the air cleaner and its gonna shit 20 grand out the tailpipes to make the thing nice.

  23. I agree 100%. If you don't want to look like a hillbilly with no education, then at least spell words in the ad right.

When I type a post, I highlight everything I type, right click and hit " Check spelling".
Download this IE spell check. It's great for forums. Don't download anything else on the page like free scan etc.

    http://download.cnet.com/ieSpell/3000-12512_4-10208550.html?part=dl-ieSpell&subj=uo&tag=button

It's amazing what it catches whether I'm just fumble fingers or just am not sure how to spell a word.

Just read on HAMB Classifieds today: car has " normal rust". What is that?????

  25. It's the quality of education that the young and some of the middle age have received. What the hell would you expect. The group that's coming along are changing the entire lexicon of today's society.

I had to edit because what the hell would you expect, I spelled lexicon incorrectly.

You know its normal... not abnormal! Meaning that the rust will not suddenly burst to life and try to kill you! Lol

Have to agree on the education quality.
My step son brought home an essay he did for English class one day. Got an A- and he was proud! While reading it, I noticed that about every word containing more than five letters in it was spelled incorrectly, yet still got a good grade on it. When parent teacher meetings were held, I commented to the English teacher on the essay step kid had done and the horrible spelling that had gone unchecked by the teacher, the teacher replied-"That's not my job to do. I graded on the content of the essay!"
Damn!! When I was in school, you'd better spell correctly or they deducted points. Even in gym class, if we took a test and misspelled words, we ran laps.

X,Y,Z, and T=Theta.....4 axis. Front, Back, Left, Right. 4 sides. time is the 5th dimemnsion. and the 5th dimension is also a chorus group that sings about riding in balloons.

I understand you completely, but the reason for calling it a post is because most of the people who will reply to an ad that says "2 door sedan" will ask you if it's a 4 door or if it's a 2 door hard top... so it helps weed some of them out.

Standard ferrous oxide, it's not the cool kind of rust that turns into gold dripping with fine brandy. ;)
