Yeah , I was there with the-rodster and watched the 32 firewalls appear and disappear. It was to the point I wanted to go back every 15 minutes to bet on how many would be there. Crappy way to run a auction but a excellent way to buy stuff if you got any money.

Dammit! With all of those people there, I figured it would have gone way out of my price range.

I saw the guy cross the street with the duece grill, and said something like "great score" and didn't think anything of it. I heard it was stolen an hour or so later. I looked for the guy but couldn't find him.

Just got back from watching some late night work on the Muntz. Leno must have decided he wanted it b/c the guys were there working by the spotlight of Leno's helicopter. I did get to ride along on the flight down to Paoli Pizza for supper.:D

Does Jay Leno shave his head??? :D

  10. I was surprised to see people say a school bus full of grilles and steering wheels wasn't worth $800. Subtract $200-$400 for scrapping the bus, if there's 4 or 6 decent grilles or banjo wheels in there, you're even money. ???

My friend who lives in that area just scrapped a empty school bus and it had no running gear and it brought 800.00 dollars for the body.Plus the scrap yard is only about 4 miles from the place.Scrap is at a all time high.So If you recalculate and figure that the 3 36 grilles that were pulled out of one bus plus the scrap you would at least double your money plus have the pick of what other treasures abound in the bus.

I was down there last night helpin a couple dudes from PA load up some stuff and the after math is still unbelievable of how much stuff still may be buried in the pision ivy and briars. No big items just small treasures I am sure.

I too also saw Jay Leno he even let me ride his jet powered motorcycle to CVS and back for some snacks for his workers that were there tearing down the Muntz....:D

All everyone kept talking about was how some big time rodder came in and bought all the 32"s as well......

  12. I've noticed an awful lot of people who can be standing there looking right at it and they still just don't get it.

Scrap is at about an all-time high, stuff is dissapearing every day, it just don't grow on trees anymore, and if you can actually find something at 1970 prices, you're crazy to pass it up even if you just sit on it for trading material. Yet they still pass on it as too expensive or too much work to deal with.

Which is fine for me at a situation like this auction, I can stick around and buy more cheap stuff and come out ahead in the long run. Sounds like some people made out good here -

I's there friday...did'nt make it saturday, wish I did now...some good deals here and there...defantly fun to look at...any one have any removal pix/stories...of cars falling apart, or looking better than expected after removal??? wish I'd a bought a bus now...there were some great finds packed in there...I'm sure many no one seen yet. I wonder if there will be a second chance auction/give away when jan. 1 comes around(last day to get your stuff) and stuff is still there....small parts lost in the rubble.

The Tudor I got kind of fell apart coming down the hill, it didn't help that it had all of the panels from Clark's 2 model A panel trucks on top of it. the top was already smashed so all it did was crease it a bit more. I wish my camera wasn't broken I would have loved to get some loading pics of the stuff....

The Vicky got a ding or two in it coming down the hill, we should have drug it down but we carried it down sideways, some of the drip rail got torn in the process from an evergreen tree. My dad is a TV repairman, he has an awesome set of tools. I can fix it!

I was going to cut the body off of the Vicky but it truned out that the subrails and pieces under the doors were so good that I had to leave it on the chassis! All I heard all day was what a piece of shit it was. All I need to do is put in a couple inches of sheetmetal and do a little welding and it will be OK....

  20. yep.. plowboy can fix the vicky pretty easy
hell you could cut off the roof and put on a bubble like your other car
or have someone else do it for you...after all you are in middle managment
    hahahah

The story behind the auction: While everyone was watching closely to see what all the interesting steel out in Mitchell was bringing and trying to dig their purchases out of the woods, our auction editor spent a bit of time digging out the story behind the salvage yard....it is pretty interesting how all this place came to be.

  23. i talked to Ron for a while
i made a comment about his old car weekly jacket that he had on
he snapped a few photos and note on what we had found and such
nice guy.. and the coment that everyone said who walked throught the place was repeated by him " man what a shame this auction wasn't 30 years ago"

It's funny seeing some of the stories and prices.

We had a great time and came home with a lot of good stuff. For once Jr got more than me. I did get the Muntz, 2 31 sedan deliveries, a 35 cabrio, and the bus everybody talks about.

The bus did not have a 32 grill in it. Not unless it was stashed in there while I was bidding. As soon as I won the bus I strapped the doors shut to keep the theives out. Best part in the bus was a set (5) of Ford Spider hub cabs for the wide five wheels. That and an 81 carb. I cherry picked most of it and gave the rest to KB.

The Star grill that was in the bus was auctioned off seperately.

Later!! We have a Uhaul, two trailers and a Sprinter van to unload. All stacked to the rim.

    Clark,

I hope that you got that sweet gauge panel from the Muntz, I noticed that it was missing later in the day.

    Some inspiration for the Muntz....

A pic of a Kurtis Sport (precusor to the Muntz) at Bonneville.

Clark got the gauge panel out. It was dangling by a wire when he got there, someone was trying to steal it while it was being auctioned off.

  29. anyone take a good look at the 32 chevy? kinda kicking myself in the ass, sounded to cheap, and the parts i could have used off it....

  30. Well, at least there was some kind of auction, even as rough as the stuff is better that than just calling the crusher. I'm still kicking myself for letting a fairly decent T get crushed last year.
