Hello, My dad bought a '31 A coupe from the local paper about a year ago. The flathead 4 that is in it has developed a substantial knock, so we are now investigating engine options. We both like the 40s/50s AV8 style, and were curious if we could run a mild flathead v8 through the Mitchell transmission and model A torque tube and rear end that are in the car? I have done some searching and found alot of info stating that model A transmissions don't have the strength to handle a flathead v8. Is this also true of the Mitchell transmission, which I believe is an original model A trans case with modern guts in it? Andrew
not to be a wise guy or question your knowledge. thats not my intention.do you know anything about model As? is the timing to far advanced? causing knock.my stocker sounds like the bottom is going to come out when to far advanced.
Im really a 20 year +, chevy guy, V8 HotRodder turned 4 Banger guy this past year. H&H in La Crecenta will sell you a Crank & BEARINGS. Original BABBIT bearing are like a soft lead & goes out, when they rebuild nowadays they do it with bearings & H&H's cranks have counterweights. Flatheads are soo . . . . It is. But they also make a syncro trans, in a model a case. Pretty slick but i think there 2-3 grand.
I think he's talking Mitchell trans, not OD. Has synchro and close ratios compared to stock. No adaptor available V8 to A, so very difficult to use...project would need lots of highly skilled work. Also buy-in is much higher than a V8 trans, which of course is available with several different gear sets better spaced than A, is plenty strong, and bolts to the V8 at one end and bolts to the A rear at the other. So why not just some '32-48 Ford trans?? The leftover money can be saved towards a Mitchell OD, definitely strong enough, which would then allow you to go down to 4.11 rear gears and have super gearing at low speeds and high. In gearing, OD allows you to have your cake and eat it too.
Also if you have a knock you can take the pan off and remove some shims to tighten up the bearing. YOu NEED to go to the ford barn.com and see how to do that, its easy.
