Technical Mix and match

Discussion in 'Traditional Customs' started by Scott71, Dec 11, 2020.

  1. Hello, I am just looking to verify some information I was provided. I currently have a 56 Chevy 3200 pickup with a 235 and the OEM 3 speed transmission. I am looking at purchasing at 327 out of an early 60’s nova. I should be able to pair the current 3 speed directly to the 327???
Someone said I would need to change bell housing but that should be about it. Any help on this, or additional info, would be appreciated
    Thanks

You need the cast iron V8 truck bellhousing and a V8 flywheel.
    The bellhousing looks like this

The front will look like this.

You can use the V8 starter that bolts to the block but may have to trim the piece of the bellhousing that curves around for the third bolt or do as I have always done and use the starter that bolts to the bellhousing.

Back in the Mid 70's I had 56 Panel with a seriously stout 327 backed by that same trans and drivetrain. That thing was a beast but packed a lot of performance trinkets in the engine.

You can use stock 55/59 V8 truck motor mounts if you want to or use one of the universal tube crossmembers if you would rather use side mounts. I'm thinking you have to add a couple of pieces to the crossmember to use the V8 with front mounts though.

Just to jump in here a bit if I may.
If it truly is an original early 60's Nova 327 (65-67) engine, you might consider selling it as they are REAL hard to find, and expensive when you do find one. You can buy TWO crate motors for what that 327 could be sold for.
Curious to see some photos or engine numbers.

  5. Here is what I have been provided. And the engine number is 3782870.

  6. Thanks for all the info. It seems to be a relatively easy conversion. You were able to get decent performance still using the 3 speed? I love the column shift and want to keep it. I am lucky to know a few good mechanics who are willing to help.
