Anyone running big rear bias tires and small radial front tires ? Iv'e allways heard you can't run bias tires with radial tires. Why not? and what happens?
So they say, and I was told the same as a kid in the 80's. I dont recall if it was bias front, radial rear or vice versa. I ran N-50-15s on the back of my 66 c-10 for years, with no problem, and had some bias mud tires on the rear of my 79 I ton. The problem I had was the tires wore out fast.
I run radials on the front, bias DOT slicks on the rear when running down the strip. I keep the fronts aired up to 35 PSI. No issues.
Like driving on ice sometimes. Or can cause death wobble. You can drive on em, it just maybe a little scary
The construction of the tire and how it responds to side loads during cornering is the major reason not to mix.
Here in Sask. it is illegal to run radials on the front with bias on the back. Other way is OK. Also illegal to mix radials and bias on the same axle.
I need to add that I DON'T run them, front radial/ rear bias DOT slick on my roadster. That would be real scary. I do run them on my '69 Camaro. On the strip only, not on the street.
I knew a guy with a pantara who mixed tires , then it rained, thrashed the pantara,,Story is it was the tires..
I put bias ply white walls on the rear of my jalopy roadster. When it was radials front and rear everything was fine. It's crazy now! Now flocks of crows follow me around. Sometimes I think I hear them calling out 'nevermore'. The radio started turning on by itself and playing wild 50's tunes, which is especially crazy because the car doesn't have a radio. But the worst thing to ever happen, I keep being followed by some asshole with a white '48 Ford convertible with lightning bolts painted on the side. If I stop too long, he jumps out, starts snapping his fingers and singing showtunes!! It's terrible!! As soon as I can afford some bias ply white walls for the front I'm getting them on, I don't know how much longer I take it!
My '32 hiboy had Pirelli radials on the front & 11:00x16 Firestone dirt track tires on the rear. I put 10,000 miles on it in less than a year, & I drove the shit out of it. It handled great. The Eastwood & Barakat '32 sedan has the same combo, & it drives just fine !
I did for a little bit on my old Plymouth. 16s with bias rears, 15s with radials front. Seamed to ride nice. I think it's mostly the tire brand and age too Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
In the early 70's I ran bias N50x15 Goodyear rally GT's on the rear of my 442 with Goodyear radials on the front , it handled and drove great , no problems. Now I have a Chevelle with MT et streets (bias) on the rear and would like to run a tall 78 series (27inches tall) radial on the front. ?????????????
I ran bias on the front of my chevelle and radials in the rear about 15 years ago and it would react funny when I hit a bump, the front seemed to bounce more and it would sway in the turns. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
The real problem is the tire construction differences. A radial will always stop faster than a bias tire, hence the no mixing on same axle. Also running radials in the front and bias in the rear can cause fish tailing while braking(doesn't mean it will but can especially in wet weather). Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
I had issues running the www bias on the front of my 34 so right now i have radials on the front and www bias on the rear...around town its fine...anything over 55 you can feel the rears starting to wiggle...she will be getting 2 more radials shortly...not some thing you need to try...just listen to the guys that say don't do it...
Never mix radials and bias ply. 2 x different animals. Bias aquaplane in the wet and don't adhere too well. I had a near death experience many years ago. There was a fatal accident here many years ago as well when a rodder had a similar experience and the car (roadster) flipped in the rain.
For the maiden voyage in the 50 chrysler I slapped some radials on the back but couldnt put them on the front because the wheels I bought were the wrong offset and hit the outer tie rod...so I just stuck the stock wheels up front with bias ply tires...boy was that scary! I was afraid to go over 45 mph it was wanting to go all over the road! I knew you shouldn't mix them like that but it was the last car show of the season... Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
