5&1/2" It's about as much as you can go w/o getting into the door hinges. It also put the windshild at 6", The minimum in WA. state.
I really like the axle in front of the grill look. The Moon tank wants to be mounted on frame horns, but with the undropped axle and the tall front tires, frame horns would be kinda high. How about running the front frame rails forward UNDER the axle ? The Moon tank mounts on top of the rails,in front of the axle, just like everyone else. Transverse leaf mounted on the split 'bones. The spring perch comes up from the front crossmember and mounts under the spring.A couple stock type U-bolts attatch the spring to the perch. I havn't figured how to run cross steering with this arrangement,or how to mount front shocks.
Hahahhahahah MOON TANK MY ASS! I have one of those HAMM'S "Tanks" I was going to use on my Touring!!!!!!!!!!!! Nice mock-up, great minds think alike
Thanks guys, just getting this far has been fun. OK, I'll keep the "tank". I gotta make it do something, I'm not much for fake shit. Even if it's just a over flow tank for the rad. Kinda wish I still drank, I'd just keep beer in it The plan so far is channeled, axle in front of the grille, and the spring behind. I wanna mount the spring to the bones, and have come up with a mount idea that should let me mount them far enough back. The spring on top of the suicide mount sounds like a good idea. That would make it easy to drop it more later if I want to. (I usally do). I was thinkin I could have the mount for the tank come off the spring perch, thru the grille to the tank. That sound workable? I still have to get a spring for the front, and figure out the brakes/spindles, and the steering, and then I should be ready to build the frame. It'll be my first full chassis fab, but I think I'm up for it. I think I know a place I can ask some questions if I get stuck!
Excuse the leaf spring...its the wrong one, but all I had close at the moment... But the design is as you mentioned...spring on top of the perch
As soon as I get my '48 Ford axle and 'bones back from the blacksmith shop where he has been pressing the perches out with his 80 ton press.... I'll mock it up and take a better pic. But thats the arrangement....the spring mounted above the "Kevorkian" perch...

[/ QUOTE ] The mounting brackets have to go over the axle, so they would have to be higher to allow for suspension travel. That puts the tank pretty high. Or the brackets could go under the axle, kind of like a Nerf Bar. Maybe someone can Photoshop a Moon tank on the front of Frankenshine, the front end layout is similar.
