basically probably pull the body off the rolling chassis and put it on an "A" chassis and chop it.

i been told that early chevy chassis are real weak and that reinforcing them is just about useless, and i want that straight axle look so i wont be keeping the eliptrical front leafs.

    Huh?

The cross-section of the Chev's frame is about 2" taller than a Model A's.

The front and rear Chev crossmembers are considerably wider than a Model A's.

Put the two next to each other and it'll be pretty obvious which one is stronger.

i have been told that the quality of the steel itself is low. as in low grade steel from chevy originally? that has been what i was told. now i dont know from experience cuz its my first early 30's chevy. i will make my decisions when i do attack it.

for anyone interested in the strenght of early chevy frames these things are STRONGER than a ford. This car was built in 1960 with a 392 hemi did 138.08 in quarter with the stock frame bored full of 6 in holes a solid mounted rear bolted to the bottom of frame a 1x2 inch structural C channel crossmember for the trans mount and the facrory front crossmember under the radiator shell. That roll bar is 3 point only NOT a cage there is no internal structure to the body at all. It was campaigned from 60 to 69 with either the hemi it has in the pic or a 430 merc both driving through a ford 3 speed standard trans.the frame doesent have any visible twists or cracks anywhere. Now im not recommending treating your car like this but i sure wouldn't worry about the frame if its in good shape I don't Doubt it will handle the output of a street mill

id definately like to hear some more opinions on this from some people with first hand experience

  7. I'm no expert, but a chevy guy, and the chevy frames are ALOT stronger than an A. really no need to even box them unless you are putting a lot of HP behind it.

    BTW, that 31 kicks ass

Hey man, I like the look of the chevy. I 've got a 30 chevy coach and I used the stock front end as is leaf's and all but I did change to a disk brakes on the stock spindles. I got a machined part that fits on the stock spindles which allowes the late model disk fit the stock spindles. I did this because I did't have any info on changing to late model drums at the time. The rear end I made blocks to lower it about 4". It's all Chevy, but I did use the Ford 9". I use what I got you know what I'm talking about.

Good read guys. I'm trying to learn more about chassis. I would like to find a GM or Chevy. I want something to be extra low. Anyone have modifieds or extremely low rods rolling on chevy chassis?

  11. ...your coupe has the "look" already and there's no motor on it, keep that Chevy front end. Like Titus says , it don't have to be draggin the tarmac to look good.

Don't know if it'll work for you, but I saw a guy flip the whole frame upside down once. Lowered both ends , Looked really cool. Don't know what chassis it was though. Good luck. I'm still looking for Nicson Side and Valve covers for a 235. Anyone?

FWIW-i have to agree with H-BOB and RUSTY1...its damn near got "the look" now. if it isnt quite low enough with the engine etc...could the stock axle be dropped a few inches like the ford ones??

Hey I bought this car from 63cad. Heres a picture. Stock frame, still need to drop the axle. I channeled the body over the frame. 454 chevy 4-speed 3.73 posi rear. Its fun but still needs tons of work.

Is'nt it possible to swap in the 49-54 Chev pickup front axle to get a bit lower stance and better brakes?
I've been a big fan of '32s since i was little kid.My mother had one...bought it when it had 7000miles for $350 .Sold it 1972 for $2500  and 14,000 miles. paint ,tyres, everything were all original.
