Scrubbin down my Mod A frame yesterday, came upon a mystery weld from some previous owner, near the middle only on the p***enger side. The inside of the frame doesn't tell much. Trying to figure out the Why. Was a good night of takin' it down to bare metal, looking forward to the forthcoming frame mods, including kick-up in the rear. 25" from the rear, driver side, are two extra holes drilled for some reason, thinking of establishing the kickup just before it, to help deal with it. 25" too far back to base a kick-up?
My guess would be that the weld was to attach the running board bracket after the bracket broke where the bolt was supposed to attach it. Charlie Stephens
There really isn't a reason why you shouldn't kick it that far forward, but they usually look much better kicked closer to the rear cross member. In all honesty, the main reason behind a kick being made so far back lies in keeping the beam strength of the rail uncut over the vast majority of it's length. Keeping the kicks out at the ends usually makes laying out cross members a bit easier, too.
Good for this pupil to know! I saw this two small holes close to the stock frame hole and thought, **** that's Gonna Have To Be Addressed, am very wary of loosing frame strength through such weld repair.
