    hi,
i have a 31 tudor that has a gas tank that is shot, It has alot of rust and big flakes at that. I got the car this summer and from what little i drove it i kept having trouble with the line getting clogged with rust and also the filter kept getting plugged tight. I wouldn't mind trying put a gask tank behind the back seat and pumping the gas to the carb. But, i was wondering if the factory style carb would handle any pressure. I can cut it down to a couple pounds but is possible with the carb that i have, or should i look at getting a stromberg type intake and mount the carb above the intake?
Any advise i can get would be appreciated.

  2. You mean the stock up-draft right? With a gravity feed?

You can pump fuel to the up-draft, but you will have to run a regulator and have it turned down to under 2 pounds of pressure.

I think the gravity feed is between 0.5-2 pounds depending on how full your stock tank is.

Just make sure your carb doesn't leak when you hook it all up, because that will mean the pressure is too high.

4ever4 is right in what he ways, but I think would be better off losing the uppie and getting yourself a 97 or 94. You'll really appreciate the difference and you won't have large puddles of gas on the floor wherever you leave it.

I cleaned my Model A tank and put in a 3M Aircraft slushing compound...no problems...Car sat for years,a nd I put it into service again. And I got rust problems too.

    Rust forms on the baffles.

My next Model A I cleaned out in a automotive hot tank..that one sat for a few years too..there was some rust in it also. I put a gallon of muriatic acid into the tank mixed with 5 gallons of water and let it sit overnight.

It cleaned out the tank alright,a nd I rana garden hose thru it to wash the rust out. Kept cleaning the hole with a piece of welding rod and catching the water overflow into a small plastic bucket underneath.

Never saw so much hard rust.

Opened up two holes in the bottom also. Patched them with a piece of sheetmetal and solder. Metal came froma coffee can. Never had a problem after sealing with the gas tank sealer from Snyder's in OH.

Just my two cent's worth. Hope this works for you.

Thank you all for the much needed info. I would prefer keeping the original tank if i could so i will try a major cleaning and go from there. Also, I see you "Artiki" I bought a new maze air cleaner this summer and it is already pitiful looking. Where it has had gas ran in it. With any luck i will shoot for the stromberg down draft setup.
    thanks again!

    I had the same deal,

flushed the tank, put sloshing compound in it, and 3 years later no worries,

the stuff from snyders works great. my grandfather has used it at least 10 model a's. i have used it in around 2 dozen bikes. it will kill a paintjob if you spill any. http://www.snydersantiqueauto.com/

  8. Most of the in line filters you buy are made to run with a fuel pump- won't work well with a gravity system. Most are finer than you need. Get to your local Model A supplier- he should have several choices to choose from.
