Got the tank off. What a pain in the ass.

Created yet another phallic-looking tool, then vacuum the tank out.
Played with my nuts a little bit...

And filled it with 5 gallons of evaporust. I'll let it sit in the sun tomorrow, and then flip it over for the following night.

And got the rumble hinges all mounted up. Still could use a little adjustment but it opens and closes.

Thanks @cactus1 Been working on it the last few nights. Haven't gotten anything done that's picture worthy. Still rotating the tank with the evaporust in it, got the driver side door latch mechanism removed (it was a huge pain in the ass and was roached beyond repair), removed the rumble latch and got that functioning again after some heat, evaporust, heat, evaporust, brute strength, PB blaster, and then grease. These small things are killing a lot more time than I would like but it all has to get done. I'm hoping to get this stuff buttoned up in the next couple of weeks and have it wired/fired within the month. Probably going to do a black paint job with a roller and brush.

 

The small things always slow me down too. I always seem to spend a couple of hours working on a handful of nuts and bolts. In the end I don't mind it's the details that make a difference on some builds.

Gas tank is still soaking with a regular rotation/shaking. Got the top bows in their final resting place. Both doors now open and close smoothly (just need the drivers side latch).

Didn't have a shrinker/stretcher so I made some cuts and welds in angled steel to support the cowl.
Got them to match the radius of the door pretty well on both sides.


Drivers side:

My plan is to cut and install wood above the doors. This way I will have somewhere to attache buttons for a canvas top that I can easily put on and take off. Here's another shot.

 

Looking great! Lots of progress is always good!

 

The removable canvas top will be a nice touch. Hurry up with the tank and start driving it!

 

Making forward progress, even when it seems small, is a good thing. Car is looking good!

 

Thanks @bengeltiger I got some more done tonight. I had to cut the tie rod because after I bent the arms on the spindles it must not have been perfect and I ran out of adjustment. Cut, grind, weld, sleeve, weld.

Got a little help from my pops last night. He got me the use of a bandsaw and table saw to cut the wood above the doors. Turned out really good by using some old-growth pine left over from my kitchen remodel. The wood has the tightest grain I've ever seen.


Will get more done tomorrow. I've got a bunch of parts coming from a gentleman on the 'barn.

 

The PO cut out a chunk of the gas tank/firewall. Welded in a new patch. Still needs some finishing but it's in there.

Some lady that lives with me and has a ring on her finger has been getting upset about my mess. Anyway, after cleaning the yard I mounted up the wood above the doors for the top to secure to.

 

Got a tail light housing and mounted it up. Still my favorite "part".

Cut down the windshield that I had and test fit it.

Did a bit of wood-whiddlin and attached the wood for the top to snap onto in the front.

Picked up a spare tire cover for my soon to be cycle fenders in the front.

Drained the gas tank of evaporust (didn't work as well as I hoped but at least it's clean and there is no major rust) and rinsed it out more times than I can count.

That's all for today.

 

Tank all cleaned up. Should go back in tonight. Rattle canned for now.

 

Did you test the tank for leaks? Would suggest it before putting it back.

 

@62pan I sure did. It has had evaporust in it for about 2 weeks and didn't leak a drop. Flushed with water, dried it out, then gas. It didn't leak a drop. The repop cap is kinda crappy though.

Tight squeeze. Didn't realize how tall the stock springs are. I need to figure out the best way to lower the seat frame (it's a 30/31). Cut down the riser? Probably going to take out the piece of wood on the package tray so it can go back farther too.

 

I moved the seat riser back 6 inches in my coupe. Cut the package tray and made new mounting holes for the riser. That would help for legs bit not your head. I would try to shorten the riser. 3 inches out of it should give you enough clearance. You will have to change the angle the seat sits because the riser is tapered. Maybe remove the riser completely and fab up some sort of mount to the floor.

 

@Binger I'll see what I can do, cutting down the seat frame might work best. I'm 5'6 so I don't need it back too far.
Finished the top wood last night, then stained it golden mahogany. I really like it.

 

Got some stuff done today. First coat is on. I was impatient and couldn't wait any longer.

Looks much better with some Henry approved black on it. I'll slowly do the bodywork one panel at a time, but at least now it doesn't look like a rat while I get there.

Finished plumbing the fuel system. I used a little Holly pump with a max output of 3 psi. May still need to bring it down to 2 psi. Also got a piece of safety glass cut today and I used a bicycle inner tube for the seal. Worked really well.

 

Looking great!! Won't be too much longer for that first drive!
