Hey- This is an old pic taken from here for reference....... Gotta /will be building the same. Haven't seen anything in any builds for a while, so wondering....... It's going to serve a purpose alright, but checking on the "A" crowd......... I'm going for round tubes.......
I'm doing the same thing on my 31 tudor. For alittle extra protection and to mount the under dash master cylinder and brake pedal from and to mount the remote reservoir under the old gas cap.
Neat. I just sketched something similar out for mounting Cowl Steering. Kind of a dual purpose thing.
CQQL- I have to do the column support, as well as hide some off topic boxes under the dash, tank area ..... Keep em' commin'!
Wouldn't square tubing be easier to attach stuff to due to the flat sides. Round tubing has only one high spot and drilling a hole in it can be a little awkward. There's actually angle iron in the under cowl area combined with standard original structure in my coupe. Stiffening it up a bit is a good idea. I think I have heard or read that when we remove the inner tank structure strength is compromised in a Model A.
I put a cage structure together for my '27 T. Made it out of 1" square tubing. It's part of the frame so it's very rigid. The cowl is bolted to it and it's rock solid. Everything is mounted to it. Steering column, pedal ***embly, ECU, relays, fusebox, interior panels, etc.
Just thinking outside the box somewhat , with the round tube. I did one before with box/square, but I didn't have a good bender then..... it's open season now, plus+ i'de like to make things a lil nicer on my end. EVINTHO= a great example! With the round tube= I'll have to tab things a bunch.....Square I can drill/tap/thread....... Decisions,Decisions...........making plywood templates out of 3/4'', so if I jack it up, no worries......Just gotta make it right before I fire up the fire stick.......
I've thought about the drill/tap side myself and decided I'll just weld a piece of thin 1 1/2" strap down the inside of each tube across the top. Then I can drill where ever I want. On the sides I'll just add tabs as needed.
I made mine out of .156 wall 1" dom tube. Drilling the tube for mounting stuff wasn't all that bad. Once it was center punched, a sharp bit would cut a hole pretty easily and the tube was thick enough to tap a 1/4-20 thread. For the more crucial stuff I made up some brackets.
