Hi, I just got a model A coup. And I don't know squat about it so forgive my stupid questions. The door latches appear to be new and the striker plates in the jambs appear to be correct. When I close the doors they will not pull up tight no matter how much I adjust the striker plate. Going down the road they rattle and bang pretty bad. Is this normal or is there a fix for this problem? Thanks ahead of time, Jim
Open up the slots on the door striker so you can move them in closer. I have had to do this on repop door strikers for model A's. I have also had to shim the striker out so it makes good tight contact.
Did you put any weather stripping around the doors? The make a thin like 1/8 by 3/8 wide that works great on model a's and crues a lot of the rattling ... if there isnt anything there its a metal to metal deal and they will drive ya nuts.. Dave
Even if you don't do the stick-on weatherstrip, stock Ford Model A's had rubber bumper blocks at the tops and bottoms of the doors to prevent metal on metal. They are cheap at all of the resto supply houses.
Ya that too.. If i remember right the slid into a steel plate of sorts mounted to the door jamb maybe upper and lower? Its been a while but one of the model a parts sites should have a pic.. Dave
I had to put blocks behind the striker plates of my stock latches to get them out far enough to catch the door latch. Also used the 1/8" weather strip. Of course, I have a 3.5" chop so my doors are far from stock, just the latches. It also could be your doors are warped-have you checked them for straightness?
