I am building a jalopy using a model A Ford front axle and so far rear axle. I think it would be easier to use something else for the rear axle that would have hydraulic brakes. What axles would exchange with the least amount of aggravation, having the same tread width and adapting to A rims? The engine I'm using is pretty weak so strength will not be a problem. Lightness would be an advantage.
'39-'48 Ford banjos are relatively easy...or so they say! '39-'40 are narrower (still a bit wider than the A, but this is the most widely used). I'm sure you'll get better and more technical advice soon enough...
There is a guy over on fordbarn with a different name but the same problem (https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=248393). You might want to follow what happens over there. You would probably be better off rebuilding your rear axle or getting another Model A rear axle if yours can't be rebuilt. Add hydraulic brakes if you like. The Model A was the last of the spring over the axle design, later cars had the spring behind the axle. This means you would need to install spring mounts over the axle if a later axle is used. The torque tube and drive shaft will definitely need to be shortened. The later axles are slightly wider but could probably be used (may look a little funny). If you add your general location to your profile maybe someone could a good place to have your rear axle rebuilt. If you want to run wire wheels with the later hydraulic drums you are going to need adapter,s see https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/40-ford-wheels-on-a-model-a.750368/#post-8330045 Charlie Stephens
You would still have to address the hydraulic brakes to the front axle. Try reading this article; http://1929modelaford.blogspot.com/2013/07/fitting-39-48-hydraulic-brakes-to-model.html
