Hot Rods Model A Frame - Cross Steer - '40 - '48 Ford Column and Box

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 28A, Dec 21, 2011.

  1. Hey fellas,

I've got a Model A chassis here, and a 40 - 48 column and box. I will have to shorten the steering input shaft and the column tube but thats easy.

I want to see pictures and any information on how anyone has mounted it to their chassis.

This is how i did it. Apparently over here we need a collapsible column if its under 450mm from the rearmost edge of the front crossmember. I don't want to do that shit, i like it how i've got it now and i'm hoping the engineers here will allow it.

    Anyway, pics..

    The mounting plate. 12mm thick.

The blue RHS tubing is in place of a proper tie rod or whatever its called. I'm running a pair of '36 spindles with juice brakes for now as rollers, but will be running a pair of '48 spindles.

Oh no, you've put it on the wrong side! (Should work tho).

  3. Why not run a stock box? Or a F1/F100 box in the stock location?? Surely they cant ping you for that.
The stock box's work fine as long as they are maintained.

  4. Well i have this here already and its in almost like new condition. I don't think its easy to run a stock side steer box with cross steer spindles either. I will wait and see what the local TAC guy (he's the Chief Inspector and into early stuff too) says about it. Theres gotta be a way around it that doesn't involve it looking shitty.
