In the process of Mocking my Original A frame for my 28 tudor project, I have installed the front suspension.
Out of the spring pack I have decided to remove maybe 2 leafs.(depends on the final stance)

but without the full thickness of the original A spring , the Front spring clip bar doesnt clamp the spring in the crossmember as it should.

so here is my simple question...(I just wanna be sure im thinking straight)

Do I add a block to take up the space? the block will be the same dimension as the "pad" on the "clip bar" but with additional thickness to make up for the removed spring leafs

if not..how did you do it?

    thanks all

  2. If you dont plan on selling the removed leafs, then just cut the center out of both of them & put those on the bottom of the leaf spring pack using the leaf spring center bolt. Already fit crossmember & you could cut them easily with an angle grinder.

Any one else got an idea..?
or what are you doing if your not running all the leafs?
I know its not just me and Carl Hagen that have model A's on here.:D

  5. Made two spacers out of 1/4" plate for mine. Saw them to length, drill a hole in the center, done. Don't get much easier.

    Spacers on mine too.

Also, I'm down to about 5 leaves left in the pack, pulled most of the short ones and put them on the bottom - they act as spacers. The final spring pack number and position won't be set until I've had time to drive it some.

Here's what I did on my Dubble A... had 14 leaves in the front pack, so here's my setup.

Started with a too short Mr. Roadster spring, a tweaked reversed main leaf, and a new custom main leaf.

Had several extra leaves, and some that were broken, so DuckusCrapus and I cut them down to make a staggerd "spacer." Here are all the 'leaves' that went into my pack.

Here is what the pack looks like assembled.

Here is what it looks like installed. Looks crooked or offcentered, but I haven't done final assembly either.

I guess i was not thinking when i sold the other A spring I had.

Think Im only going to need the space of 3 or 4 leafs, I will try to make spacers out of 1/4" steel stock the size of the lower plate boss and stick with that until i feel out the ride , or see how it sets once the weight is on it.

    Thanks for all the ideas..

Ive also got some old truck springs i could cut blanks out of and have them sized to fit.

When I did the front spring on my RPU, I needed to lift the front end up an inch on it. I went down to the spring shop and had them make me 3 spacers out of 3/8 spring steel. They were each about 6" long, and cost me $3 each. I had 4 made, and used 3 of them and they've worked perfectly so far.

    Goztrider..
is it important to use spring steel?
even if its not being used as a spring?

maybe it doesnt wear from the spring movement?

if this is the case I will make my spacers out of that old truck spring.

I've got mild steel spacers that I've made for both my front and rear springs. It doesn't have to be spring steel. The crossmember/spring seat/clamps aren't spring steel...:)
