Hey all- just searching for locations to mount my "fuse box/panel". Open to any options. Battery can be under dash(no factory tank),or in "trunk". Will be using some non friendly items as in an electric pump, and fan. also several relays on items= all mounted to said panel..... Can mount anywhere, but, checking to see WHERE,and WHY you mounted your's where you did. Ease of maintenance? Looks,? Space?, Can't be a contortionist in the dark?..... My thinking as of now is- upper left cowl (inside) with a plate= which means I'm bending like a pretzel for any servicing, or, in trunk area, but will have to be in front of tank(think towards the rear behind the tank- towards the *** end(make sense?/ ( trunk mounted) ,and possibly against a fenderwell.....What did you do to make it "have your cake and eat it too"? This will be my own design,so no kit,and can wire/route in any way/shape/form. Just looking for ideas....Pic's very appreiciated..... Thanks-Mike
I think batteries need vented, & can explode. Maybe some are safer than others? But I guess I'm putting it (battery) in the far back of trunk. My reasoning is, Won't fit under car in many places & those that do are a chore to jump or remove. Not in my lap or face in slight chance it could explode, easy to jump/charge/change, not side by side with behind seat TANKS tank, easily vented. Negative is: furthest distance for cable from starter or panel. I like panel under original tank in dash & maybe someone has designed enough slack the panel could drop down plate for accessing? Good question & looking forward to learning some tech here b/c I'll be at this design stage soon too. Pics & wiring experts: chime in? I'm all ears & subscribed
Hell we have three GM cars in the famly with the battery under the back seat where the factory put it. They make batteries with a vent tube to run down though the floor below the battery that will work inside the car or in the trunk with no fume issue. Most German cars have used them for years on end. I'm there with ya on that have to scrunch down and twist sideways and hold the flashlight in your teeth thing to reach and see the fuse panel and there has to be a better way. Maybe put it on a hinged panel that swings down after you release a latch and gets the fuse panel and relays down several inches below the dash where you can see and work with them easily then swing them back up out of the way.
Do not install a battery under the dash, god forbid a crash may happen, the last thing you want is all that energy locked in there with you.....seriously. Try mounting fuse panel to the kick panel high enough the dash hides it.

Under the drivers seat in my RPU because the switches and ignition are mounted on the seat riser. Easy to lift the cushion and check fuses.
I went with the "mini" fuse system, to keep it as small as I could. I'm happy with the fact that the wire bundle comes out of the side (headed in the correct direction) as opposed to the other kits I have installed (in other makes of cars) where the main wire bundle kind of comes out of the back of the main fuse block. The mini comes with a black plastc cover (that covers the fuses) to make it a bit more stealthy. I will trim the kick panel, ofcourse.
Thanks Guys- Was just looking for alternatives..... Fuse panel will go in driver's cowl area. Battery will be trunk mounted. Room/Space/Servicing is what I was looking for. And- too many hot leads heading back to panel(trunk),then coming forward again..... Quite possibly adding a "service loop" behind panel with some dzus fasteners to drop panel to the floor just in case..... Since no factory tank,i'll be doing the "double hoops"= one at reversed firewall ,and one under dash rail. I will have sufficient room to mount anything I need. Not worried about battery cabling, just + power traveling back and forth= I tend to over-engineer somewhat, but have never had an issue. Once I get thing rolling,(sooner than later,I hope) I will post up of my panel. Thanks Again.
Check out the first couple pics on this link. That is the primary reason for the lift up bases. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...model-a-rollpans-bengels-hot-rod-prod.615201/
Here's a pic of the fuse panel I made for my '31 located in rt. side cowl. Made a bracket to attach to right side "A" post.
I like! is that the RIGHT side though? Looks like drivers...... I also like incorporating the ign sw. there. very slick idea- one I may copy. Dash will be filled with the standards(well maybe)= 3 ' tach/speedo/,oil/volts,h20-2-1/16' and a hanging vac gauge...... Probably going to fab a dash.... Would really like to incorporate a later(40's) unit, but with the gauges (SW"s) gonna have to be creative. Most + leads will be heading to engine compartment, and only fuse block power coming from battery in rear. Thanks for the response!
Put mine on the p***enger side.... wish I hadn't. Now I want to put in some a/c and I'm running out of room.
