I am curious as to how many guys are still using your factory tank. I am planning to re-do my A and wanna keep the rumble seat also running full fenders aswell, but curious about moving the tank to a different position.. I have heard pro's and con's about keeping the factory tank location. As well as saddle tanks, and also putting a 32 style tank in.. Any thoughts?
are you staying "banger" engine? I have a big issue with having 10 gallons of fuel over my lap..i know thats the way they did it back than..but it dont make it right, and it sure dont make it safe. I cant use mine..'cause i cut a big hole in it for my instrument cluster..and i wouldnt have ever used it , even if i didnt
This has been some discussion on this before: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=112446&highlight=tank http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=125170&highlight=tank http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=398421&highlight=tank
my thoughts are that if is working fine then leave alone. if thats the car in your avatar that you are talking about, i would for sure leave it be. that is a nice coupe..
There are only a couple of options for a different tank location on a Model A. I have a friend that has saddle tanks and he likes them. I thought about moving the tank on my coupe (Avatar), but decided not to; it has the cowl tank and is running a B motor.
It has a running Banger in it, but I think I am gonna run a more Highway speed motor.. I don't have the money to spend on a banger motor for it to be as reliable and as powerful as a stock SBC.. Besides I have a real nice 58 283 sitting on a stand just begging to be used..My tank is in real good shape.
I too was not thrilled with having the gas tank sitting on my lap, and recently moved it to the rear (forward of the rear axle). I bought a spun aluminum tank from Coyote Gear, and vented it down through the floor. I'm planning on welding in a make-shift fire wall to seperate it from the vehicle's interior, and buy a sealed battery box.
How much space does it take up in the rear? I wanna try to keep the rumble seat for when the kiddies wanna ride around town..
Mine takes a lot less than 5 hours to go 180 miles. I'd probably want to do more that just change the motor to go faster in a Model A.
So true I used to do alot of road trips years ago..and would get pissed at anything that wouldnt do at least 300 miles on a fill up a good 4 to 5 hour drive..or more if it had it.
guys think about it, that is about the only place on a car that is going to be safe from ANY impact, if something hits you there and ruptures it, dont worry about it, you'd be dead anyway
maybe so..but what a way to go and if you have a restraint system in your car ( you do have one dont you?) your chances would be better,,I would hate to be getting my belt off just to find my lap on fire full of gasoline..stumble out to the curb to die laying in a pool of gas when i was fine as far as the wreck was concerned, just burned to death because of an 80 year old system thet they stopped using by the 32 ford. If I had a stock banger i would probably keep it stock, but most of us are building go fast Rods with 2 to 3 or more times the power it had when it was originally built. all im saying is there are safer systems ..and placement and ways to protect to a certain degree..give them a chance to be in your car for that unexpected situation ..it could be the difference between you being a marshmellow ,or the life of the party when you get there. it kinda falls into the seat belt thing for me..they work.
I''m changing more than just the motor. Anybody that knows me knows I like to drive my cars and drive them hard from time to time. As much as I like the A and its simplicity, its just not what I want out of a hot rod, trust me I'm not talking cup holders AC and lumbar support, Althouh a cup holder would be nice...lol I want a little more reliability little more user friendly drivetrain and brakes (wife drive our cars aswell).
Thats what I'm talking about, a 32 tank being in the back brings back PINTO nightmares, and Saddle Tanks bring back nightmares of the older Chevrolet trucks it seems to me that behind the driver seat/rumble seat/trunk area seams to be the safest, but like I said the kids like to ride back there at times too..I have to pick the lesser of all problems which means that the kids might have to fight over who gets to go and get ice-cream on Sundays....
I have an A and i'm gonna run my stock tank 347 w/a blower, they say it's not safe but when you think about it, the car it self is not safe. if you ride a motorcycle you sit on the tank, go figure. my two cents
i ran a stock tank on my first coupe, next coupe i didn't, my current build will go back to the stock tank, not a fan of saddle tanks or running a 32 tank in a model a and i will have a working rumble seat also....
my 2 cents..32 tank in the rear with a rear end collision.. side mounts with side collison..or what with a stock tank ??
i ran the stocker in my 31' RPU and it only scared me the one time we got a fuel leak (long story) and had a rather large fire. we got the fire out but we all felt like it was a real close call. on my 31 tudor we are re-locating the tank for other reasons but, i didn't really like 10 gallons of fuel in my lap either...
Here is ours, 14 gallon (I think?) deuce tank, mounted with stub rails from Tanks Inc. Took a bunch of fitting to get it to look right but now IMO it looks as if it belongs there. We have the horn covers too, I just have not got that far yet. gotta slice & dice them a little to make them fit. lots of road clearance, even if (god forbid) we were to lose a wheel the lower shock mounts and the backing plate will hit the dirt well before the tank.
Seriously, what kind of accident is going to make the stock tank leak and catch on fire? Even a terrible front end crash would likely send the engine under the tank. Was the tank a big issue back in the 30's? Other than the inconvience of reaching over to the center with the nozzle.
Put mine behind the seat (I also moved the stock seat back a few inches for leg room). It does take up room in the Rumble Seat, but I really just use it for a trunk anyway. -Jeremy
