Any reason I shouldn't use the original gas tank on my Model A with a BBC engine? It's clean enough to use and doesn't leak.

I heard that same thing and dedicated myself to seeing that didn't happen. LOL Thanks for the reply on the tank. Using it will save money and problems locating a usable spot for another one.

  4. Jack, personally I'm not crazy about using the original tank,it cuts down on being able to use all the gauges and your not running a Flathead. HRP

I have the original tank with a sbc in a sedan and it will work but as said you limit yourself. Ac Heat wiring and gauges become a bigger challenge. Not to mention that it only holds 11 gallons. And will COMPLETELY run out. No need to ask how I know.

Danny, Guages will be a problem but putting a gas tank in the rumble seat area will cause hate and discontent with my 5 year old. I may use it for a while until the rumble seat new wears off.

    Neat looking model a !

  8. Just an option, a buddy of mine cut down a c10 pick up tank & put it behind the seat

  9. I haven' tried a BBC in an A, but I imagine removal of the distributor could be an issue if you are running stock wheelbase. It was a real pain to take out with the 327 in my '29 CCPU.

I will have to cut the firewall a bit (a lot) to fit the engine

The Model A in my avatar is not the one I have now. I have the body off the frame and am boxing it. I have the firewall out to recess it.

SKO Ford, I was hoping a tall slim tank would fit behind the seat and still leave room in the rumble seat area.

  13. He doesnt have a rumble seat but there should still be room

Speedhut guages only 1.1" deep [] = fit right in without modifying the tank

I saw a few threads about this topic on here and it's dealer choice. 50/50 argument. Lots of guys run em, lots of guys don't. I'd say do it if it will work for your set up. Saw a guy post a pic of his A that got rear ended, he said " glad I didn't run a 32 tank".
And you lose trunk space if you mount it in there.
If its clean, try it out.

I run the Model A gas tank in my 30 and have no problems, fumes or leaks. Another thing if your running a BBC. A simple way to recess the fire wall , Is to driil out the rivits that hold it in and flip the fire wall the other way around, recess is in 3-4 iches...Dan

I thought about that Dan. My firewall has lots of holes in it. I'm kinda leaning toward the wheel barrow bed for a recess. I've seen some that were done pretty neat.

    Tedley,
I tend to agree but with this in the front end of a Model A coupe, I don't think it matters where the tank is. LOL

I have a bbc in my tudor. Of course there is more than one way to do it, but the way I did it severely cut down the gallons the tank would hold if I were to use the original tank. And mess with the original gauge. With my tank gone, that space is used for my gauges , glove box, fuse block stereo, etc. You can check out my build thread to see the way I did it. A bbc in a model a is a tight fit. Good luck! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=653879

With that much motor, I don't think I would want my 5 year old in the rumble. The Model A gas tank is vented thru the cap and you can get fumes from a full tank if you have the windshield open. Believe me, without AC you will need the WS open to get fresh air inside.

I have been around Model A's all my life, both Stockers and Hotrods.Working on them in my Dad's Shop and then my own Shop . never seen anyone have catastrophic problems with the Fuel Tank in the original location.

  27. The firewall recess or firewall flip hits the back of the tank.

There's a lot of space where that tank is and the space needs to be used for something .
Personally I take issue with 10 gallons of fuel directly in front of my chest, on my lap. I also take issue with the fuel hanging out of the back like a target. Funny that I have no issue with 5 gallons between my legs and under my balls. So I suppose its just what you are comfortable with. Any argument for or against revolves around around a compromise, what do you want to compromise on & that compromise will be different for the next guy.

I am going to give the original tank a try also, eventhough I am not running a BBC.Was also fortunate to have been given a Moon tank so am going to use both to add some volume.

It seems to be acceptable but personally I wouldn't do it. I don't like the idea of gas in my lap and will never be able to forget being in a sand buggy many years ago with a group of people, the father of his young son was driving and the boy fell out and was run over by one of the rear tires and killed immediately. Buckle your son up in the front seat and be safe. Sorry if this isn't what you wanted to hear but my take.
