Anybody out there using an original A horn with a 12 volt system. Will this work or will I need to get some kind of converter to run 6v to the horn? I haven't hooked it up to 12v yet to see what it sounds like, because I don't want to toast it. I still want it to go ah-ooo-gah! I know I can buy a 12v repro, but they want more than I paid for my engine for one.
I dunno about Model A horns but I ran a 6v VW horn on my 12v VW. It was great... sounded like a VW horn only a heck of a lot louder.
Mine worked on 12 volts but made a sound like it took a huge bong hit of helium before the OOoo-gah! More like EEEeegah! Know whatta mean?
Im pretty sure it will work on 12V, probably it will sound terrible since the speed will pickup. The reason for this is that you will not use the horn for long times, so it wont heat up. I Use my 39 Ford 6 Volt horns on 12volt, for two years now without problem. To be on the safe side get a voltagedrop. And connect in series.
1. Useitasis. Mine (a '32) BELLOWS on 12V, and there isn't much of the ahooga sound since it comes up to speed almost instantly. Fiddling the adjustment screw (tighter) might change this. 2. A suggestion from someone on Ahooga.com: Run the power THROUGH a 6V coil--wires to the two small terminals. Said to be just right. 3. Model A places sell a device for just this conversion--actually, at least two different ones are out there. Remember, the horn gets a hot and a ground wire--not grounded through case like most beep horns.
Thanks guys. I knew there would be someone around here who would have done it. I think I'll try to find a 6v coil. That sounds like it might be the way to go.
