Technical Model A Hot Rod for the strip... and street!

  1. Awesome build!

Sam, I also like when a '32 frame follows an A body curvature. Here's my plywood Tudor template resting on the '32 frame at OJ's shop.
-The green tape follows the actual body line.
-The frame is about 1/2"-3/4" inboard of the body.
-The subrails rest on the frame.

  2. Thank you Gary! Great minds think alike!
If you’re done with that plywood… send it my way! Haha

  3. I have nothing. I am putting an engine/trans/rear into my POS '55 Taxi for the third time so I can sell it... once sold, I can get back on the street/strip coupe!

    Sam,
Watching the success of the F-rod has been inspiring! That F-rod is so well sorted-you've really done an amazing job on it! I've been working on a Model-A in fits and starts for about 5-6 years (see profile photo). The coverage of your work on David's F-rod has really helped to keep me motivated. I have much more modest goals (very mild sbc power to get it on the road), but I have come into both a 13.5:1 383 sbc and a 13.5:1 454 BBC, so who knows what I may get into... The car has a T350 right now with B&M shift kit and 3000 stall, but I have a transbrake T400, several 4speed options to choose from: from M20 and M22 Muncies to a clutch-assisted Hightower or Jerico, a pro-shift TexRacing, and a clutchless GF101 (all on my shelf), but I wanna be sure I feel safe with the auto in the old chassis before I add the complexity of hard manual shifts to the program. Most hot rods around here are, frankly, death traps with terrible ergonomics and safety-it is important to me for the car to be a good driver, and a safe drag car. I hope to do a lot of 1/8-mile at my local tracks in the Coupe, a lot of street miles, ECTA 1-mile passes, and if the chance to get on the salt or dirt comes up-I wanna do it! I have recently retired, and after I finish a quick refresh on my tow vehicle, I hope to put 100% of my effort into "finishing" my coupe. I volunteered at Drag Week 2019, will be volunteering at Sick Week 2025 and hope to volunteer at Drag Week 2025 and to bring the Coupe to Drag Week. Finally my question: Are you able to share with me how you have handled front wheels for David's car? Choosing narrow front-runners are tricky these days. It seems like we have only a few options, and I trust you above just about anybody. My Model-A has 5X5.5 old Ford bolt pattern. I'm not afraid to run adapters, but it is not my first preference. It looks like you and David have perhaps done the production 4.5" wide Torque Thrusts (?), and are currently sporting some slotted mags. For your mags, did you go with the new 15X5 US Mags for your slots ($220 each from Summit for blank bolt pattern, plus machine shop cost to drill to 5X5.5 bolt pattern), or did you dig up some old Ansens? I have seen that Mike Finnegan is running what looks like Kidney Bean front runners (perhaps from Rebel-$710 for a pair made custom to 5X5.5 bolt pattern?) on his gasser to match his slotted mags on back. I need to choose from among these three options, I guess. Are you able to help me by discussing how you guys made your wheel choices?

    Thanks,
    Keith
