Hello I was wondering what the best choice for a steering column for my 30 sedan would be? I am wanting a older junk yard.My sedan is channeled 3 1/2 and will be chopped if that makes a difference. Just curious what others are using and what years to look for, also safety. My wife will be driving it and my boy when he is older. Thanks and some pics would be nice.
There's a guy over on the Ford Barn that sells F100 boxes that are modified to bolt onto Model A frames, it's a common update for stockers. You would have to shorten the column for a channeled car but it's not a big deal. If I'm not mistaken they're '53 - '56 boxes.
You asked about a column, don't know if it helps but here's what I have: Steering box: 1965 Mustang Steering wheel, shaft and bearings: 1967 - 73 Chevy truck (?) Steering mast jacket: exhaust pipe Lower mast jacket support: Late 1931 Ford Re the steering shaft etc that's what I was told when I bought the complete assembly at a flea market... I removed the mast jacket etc and just used a piece of exhaust pipe. I welded the lower end of the shaft to a Speedway Ujoint. See photo
Corvair columns are small and clean - nothing but the wheel and turn signal. That's what I'm using. Space considerations at the bottom end made me go to a double U-joint into a Corvair reversed box for traditional steering.
I am using a 1956 Ford F100 Steering Column connected to a GM (525) Saginaw Manual Steering Box (cross Steering). I built the column from parts I collected from (EBay, & MACs). The column is 2 diameter and the turn signals works reasonably well but the horn wire runs through the steering shaft so I had to sacrifice the horn button on steering wheel until I collect all the parts to convert to 59-62 column.<O</O</O
Because i like early Ford steering wheels, i like to shorten the same column to go with it. A machinist friend can make you up a support for the bottom of the column.
B- bob What year column are you talking? Pics? I am a tool maker by trade just need a direction. Thanks for all the ideas lots of good ones on here.
F-100 boxes were what we used and you can mate an early colum to them like a '40 or just use the truck colum. I like the earlier colum with the lock in them but I also like the simplicity of the truck colum, to me either one looks good. They were still using the locking colum in the '46 trucks I don't know about after that.
