Hello I am building a 1928 Ford Model A Sedan. It is right now a rolling ch***is with the body on minus the motor an trans. Pic to come later. I have a couple of questions.

    1. I have to register the car. I have the vin numbers that are on the frame. Do i take toughs number and go to the DMV and tell them this is what I have an here is the vin number. What should I tell them? Or if anyone has a pink slip for thie kind of car will you be willing to sell it?

    2. I have a I-beam drop axle for a Model A and i have a complet set up for a 56 Ford truck axle brakes and all. Do these two line up in the same possition?

Thanks for reading and the HELP! -The Worm

You are lucky enough to have the vin on the frame and still ledgible, an important thing. You scribble a pencil over a paper to get a tracing off the frame. The numbers will confirm the production date, also important when applying for a missing registration. I had a chart with the sereial numbers and date manufactured on the old fordbarn, don't know the link that had it. Someone on the A forum will know.

  5. New York and California are entirely different animals. It used to be you'd need a CHP officer to verify the serial number on your car, but with all the other changes they've made lately someone more well versed on CA law will have to step up on this one.

I do know you want to use the number that's on it, you use a ***le from some other car and get caught - and CA is giving these cars a lot closer look than they used to - and you're pretty well screwed.

  6. Search for some of the many CA registration threads. A common theme is to go through AAA. But as stated, study YOUR state. there are a ton of threads on here.

    The Worm,

Find a Registration Service in your area and have them get the registration for you. They will ask for an ID number. Give them the frame number. If you can take the frame to them they will verify the number and get the registration for you. The original number is stamped on the frame under the cowl so you have to have it verified before you install the body.

I have heard SOMEONE say that they stamped a copy of the original ID number on the frame where they could be seen after the body was installed and after they had there registration. This is technically illegal to do, but who is to say how the duplicate numbers got there and if you were ever stopped and asked to show the ID numbers there they are.

My service charged me $35.00 to come to my house and verify the number. I am waiting to get the car together enough to get a weigh ticket because it is a roadster pickup and in California trucks require weight certification for registration. I will try to keep the weight under 1500lbs so that I can run it without fenders. 4 Gallon gas tank foam seats Helium in the tires etc. Just kidding.

I will take the weigh ticket to them and pay the remainder of their charges and the DMV charges including the tax charge and let them handle DMV.

I recommend that you let them figure out a reasonable value based on their experience because the Idiots who run The State of California have spent money that they didn't have to keep the Unions voting for them.
Now the state is looking to make up the short fall by going after the Car hobbiest who have registered cars at low purchase value.

The service charges a nominal fee for their service but it is worth every penny because they know how to avoid any of the traps that can drive you crazy with DMV. You've Heard the Horror Stories I'm sure. Those stories are many and are true.

Those services work for you but they have to be carefull what they say so temper what you say and they will help you.

    :) :) :) **** :) :) :)

you don't need a CHP officer, any certified VIN verifier can check the number and sign them off. i would avoid the CHP at all costs because they will make you go through a tech inspection and make your life a living hell.
