model A rear end

Which year, make and model ford 9' rear end is proffered when using in a model A 1931 ford Tudor sedan.

 

Best I recall the holy grail was the 57 Ford station wagon 9".

 

1986 ford truck 4x4 9 inch

 

Early Bronco is the right width & has 5x5 1/2" bolt pattern.

I studied up on this a while back and pretty much any 57-early 60s one or the early Bronco was about the right width. If you're running a stock Ford front end with the 5x5.5 pattern a Ford truck uses the same pattern right up into the 90s which is why someone suggested the '86 Ford truck rear - but a lot of those are pretty wide. Seems to me you want one around 58-60 inches across. You could probably change the car rearend over if you wanted, they all need brackets welded on to run a transverse spring, so you're going to probably want to pull it apart when you weld it anyways. Or maybe not. Like everything else it's personal preference.

 

What about a 9", or other with 5 x 4 1/2 bolt pattern?

 

I used a 57 Ford nine inch from a car. It was perfect. Don't overlook 8 inch rears, plenty strong, easier to find, and usually cheaper.

 

Most Model A want a rear end that is 56 inches wide measured from axle flange to axle flange. Remember some folks measure from housing flange to housing flange, there is a big difference. Diff width will also depend on your chioce of wheels and there off set.
F100 stud pattern will suit 1935 ford wire wheels and similar, this would work well if you use F100 style front brakes. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

PM Andy here on the HAMB he is the man when it comes to this stuff. Did you say what kind of wheels?

 

The 8-inch in 70's Mavericks/Comets is a good fit. An A is a light little car, if you don't have a big motor in it, you're fine with the 8-incher.

53-56, did you say what kind of wheels? Can anyone ID the car in the pic?

 

52 to 54 Ford. It will NOT have a 9 inch under it unless someone installed after it left the factory ( doubtful ). If you can live with the
4.5 standard Ford wheel pattern ... the early 5 lug Maverick is a great fit ... width wise. It is 56 inches wide. A stronger 9 inch ...
would be a early Bronco. Stronger and has the 5 on 5.5 whele pattern ( like a 53 to 56 Ford F-100 ) ... but it is 58 inches wide.
I have a early Bronco 9 inch rear end and the 53 - 56 F-100 brakes under my 32 Ford roadster.
This allows the use of stock early Ford rims and the highly desirable early Ford hub caps.

 

that wagon is a 54. like duece roadster said, it won't have an 8 or 9". what engine are you running in the A?
